Pointless Quoting

...Can I practise here or will it be seen as wasting space?

Hi black angel :)

Go right ahead and practice on this thread. If you like, send me a PM and I'll delete it after you are finished. :D

Note to all: The correct way of doing this is to follow the directions Annastasia gave. When quoting someone, the [] need to be in place at the beginning and the end, and the line that shows the person's name, date and time should be on top. If you take that out, it is defeating the purpose of quoting them.

Also, three dots (...) can be added at the beginning, end, or middle of a sentence or paragraph to represent words that you have edited out for the sake of clarity. :D

so thats everything quoted then, i think

I can quote the whole page but i dont know how to do a tiny bit of writing

Just delete the bits you don't want but make sure you keep the brackets in the right place such as this :

This is just too funny, now ive got the quotes with nothing in it lol

There seems to be a trend for people to quote other people for no reason. What I mean is, I just read a post that was a request for a fish I.D. The original post had two large pictures in it. There was only one reply and that person had decided to quote the entire of the first post, pictures and all. I can understand that quoting might be useful for those replying in threads with10+ responses but as the first replier? And the pics too? Are there any rules for quoting? I know I'm being a bit touchy on this one but it gets to me. It's pointless! Instead of quoting just say "Hey {person who posted question/comment} regarding your question/comment I think...." Not too difficult is it. Also makes more posts fit on one page and means a bit less scrolling and faster page load times. Great for people without broadband.

Just a little grip!

I give up

if you look at the text it put in when you clicked reply, you can see the quoted message.. you can simply delete the unwanted text, but dont touch the [ quote] or [ /quote] boxes....

The is always an open quote box [ quote - with some info ] and a corresponding [ /quote ] box.

if a quote is quoted, the new quote will surround the old. i.e. the open and close quote ones will be at the beginning and end. like this...

[ quote by jon ]

i had some fish

[ quote by bob ]

ooh i like fish..

[ /quote ]

[ /quote ]

so in that case, if you only wanted to quote bob.. you would delete jons bits:

This from the beginning.

[ quote by jon ]

i had some fish

and then the very last quote bit

[ /quote ]

and to delete bobs stuff.. remove:

[ quote by bob ]

ooh i like fish..

[ /quote ]

and of course you could just delete a bit of their text.. but no editing it you cheeky monkeys..

Bet your confused now eh.. sorry.. squid.

Waterloo starts a thread about too many quotes and we're teaching someone how to quote in it.

I do agree though that everything except the pertinent part of the quoted reply should be deleted. I have always done that but I'm sure some people are too lazy to do it. Kind of like being too lazy to spell check and make their post grammatically correct. I know I am guilty of that at times. Usually more like being in a hurry rather than lazy I guess.
