There seems to be a trend for people to quote other people for no reason. What I mean is, I just read a post that was a request for a fish I.D. The original post had two large pictures in it. There was only one reply and that person had decided to quote the entire of the first post, pictures and all. I can understand that quoting might be useful for those replying in threads with10+ responses but as the first replier? And the pics too? Are there any rules for quoting? I know I'm being a bit touchy on this one but it gets to me. It's pointless! Instead of quoting just say "Hey {person who posted question/comment} regarding your question/comment I think...." Not too difficult is it. Also makes more posts fit on one page and means a bit less scrolling and faster page load times. Great for people without broadband.

Just a little grip!

yep i agree. there's a few instances of that i've come across today. only slightly annoying but worth a mention. does it have any impact on the forum web space, repeating pics etc.. i dont really understand that technical side of things

I actually like quoting but don't always use it. If obviously a topic has several replies, and I want to direct my reply to a specific poster on that topic, of course I'll use the quote function. But if that included pictures, I will delete them, as they take up unnecessary space on the viewing board.

I think with the quote/reply buttons being so close together some people click on both and then don't bother to amend the result.

The easiest thing is to make sure people preview their posts before submitting, but you will always get lazy people!

its done automatically if to reply to a post rather than the thread...

the "reply buttom a thte bottom of the post will add the original post to the reply automatically...

I quote if I want to reply to a specific statement that someone made. And even then, I delete all of their post except the part that I am refering to which usually is only one or two lines.

Such as yours over in the Rogues Gallery today ? ;) :p

No, pics hosted on Photobucket (and such websites) has no impact on TFF webspace - just the viewing space on the current view that pushes everything down and one has to scroll through wads of repeat pics.

I don't think pics uploaded directly to TFF are added to quotes or replies anyway, so would have no impact if this were the case. I haven't tried it though....

I think a lot of people like myself just have not got a clue about computers
I dont know how to isolate sentences from previous posts and end up quoting the whole thing.
Perhaps someone could tell me(and possibly others)how to do this?

I hope this one isnt pointless quoting  ... it shouldnt have an impact on the forum webspace, as it will keep one copy of the image, and refer to the same one.. it just displays the same one twice..

Im not sure on the affect of the bandwidth (not sure how this forum is ran with regards to bandwith allocation or allowances).

Loading shouldnt take much longer either, as the image will be cached by the browser (techie bit.. it has a copy).

The irritation to people is more to do with wearing out thier fingers on the mouse scrolling wheel. :hyper: :hyper:

Weaver - When you quote something, and then go to reply, you should see all the text you chose to quote encased in the quote brackets. You can just delete out the text you don't want. But you need to make sure the quote brackets stay there, otherwise it won't turn out right.

Is that what you were wondering, or am I misunderstanding?

Ive never quoted because I dont know how
Can I practise here or will it be seen as wasting space?

Hi black angel :)

Go right ahead and practice on this thread. If you like, send me a PM and I'll delete it after you are finished. :D

Note to all: The correct way of doing this is to follow the directions Annastasia gave. When quoting someone, the [] need to be in place at the beginning and the end, and the line that shows the person's name, date and time should be on top. If you take that out, it is defeating the purpose of quoting them.

Also, three dots (...) can be added at the beginning, end, or middle of a sentence or paragraph to represent words that you have edited out for the sake of clarity. :D
