Pm?

Is spam by PM really that much of a problem? I've moderated a very busy AV forum previously & although the amount of spam posted is undoubtedly a big problem, can't say that I ever saw much by PM.

At one time 12,000 porn spam PM messages in about 24 hours. That's a big problem.

Generally if I see a new member who is obviously not a spammer needing pm access I can switch it, since this topic started a bit over an hour ago while I was still asleep it didn't get seen.

I'm not sure where the rule came from - only became a Mod here fairly recently and the site dates back to 2003.

edit - ahhh, so that's why!

[…] It's also unlikely that they will take the time to engage with the forum (to ask the OPs question) as most spammers simply don't have the time and need to post their material as quickly as possible.
I meant more that since the content of the messages is not reviewed before someone is upgraded to the PM-able group at 10 posts, an automated spam bot can post 10 posts to even the time-restricted forums in 5 minutes and when I have reported spam, it has sometimes taken a lot longer than that for it to be removed.

My own experience with spammers on a retired forum is that about 1/3-5 will post once to every forum on the website.
