Okay so I have been thinking my pleco is a sailfin. He has 12 or 13 rays in his dorsal fin which means he would be a sailfin right? Do they grow as large or larger than a common plec? Any special needs for a sailfin or..? Also, what kind of veggies do youall feed your plecs? I tried cucumber and he wasn't that interested.

Also, what is this?

I saw something like it at the LFS and wanted to pick a few up, but I didn't as I had no idea what it was. It was labeled as a butterfly pleco I believe at the store. :dunno:

I feed my sailfin algae wafers and he loves them. Their max size is 18" but full grown can be anywhere between 10" and 18".

Not sure on the id from your pic....sorry

Mine loves his algae wafers as well, but I was interested in feeding him fresh green veggies. Would lettuce be okay? Or would he not eat it?

My sailfin is around 5 or 6 inches right now and is happy in my 120 gallon.

Yeah your tank size is fine, he'll be very happy in there.

Lettuce, peas and frozen spinach are all ideal and should go down well.

Yep i think longhorn13 has got it, check this link.

Thanks a lot! I wonder if they would do good in ponds, because my parents are probably going to build an outdoor pond in our backyard. There will be 2 goldies and then maybe some hillstream loaches once the algae starts to grow a little.

Hi. The pic you've poated is a Hillstream Loach, it's not actually a catfish. Check out the link below:

Chris
It's not actually a true loach either!
Also known as
  • Butterfly Plec
  • HongKong Plec
  • Chinese Plec
  • Siamese Plec
  • Hillstream loach
  • Butterfly Loach
  • Borneo Sucker
and a whole list of other names made up on the spot by fish stores who don't know what they are or what to make them sound more exciting.

My favourite store-invented name is 'Dwarf stingray pleco'

They need highly oxygenated cool water with a strong current. They can survive in a tropical tank but it severly reduces their lifespan.
