Hi,

As the title states I'm wondering are there any plecos which are suitable for a 14 gallon (it's 14 gallon long not tall).

My common plec (different tank) is developing a great little personality (or vastly growing personality), and I was wondering if there was anything suitable for a smaller tank.

I quite like bristle noses but I'm aware they need a bigger tank; is there anything smaller (that doesn't need to be kept in a group) which would fit into my 14 gallon :)

Maybe Rubbernose Plecos or Bulldog Pleco

I think BNs are one of the smallest you can get. Otherwise you are looking at Otocinclus.

theres loads of choice

peckolitia sp L038, L134, L103

ancistrus L111, L279, L344, L289, L309, L327, L338, L352, L355, L349, ancistrus 'portel',ancistrus 'puerto ayacucho', ancistrus 'triradiatrus',

chaetostoma L277, dorsale, lineopunctatum, nudirostre, villavicencio ll, tachiraense,

dolichancistrus L225, 'colombia',

hypancistrus L129, L174, L250, L262, L316, L340, L046, 'rio curua'

panaqolus L162, L074, L206, L169, LDA67 'dentex',

others include L127, L189, L239,

I would be very wary of a Bulldog Plec (Chaetostoma genus, loads of species that often arrive in mixed groups at stores, including my favoure LFS)... http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/species.php?species_id=308

Like my riverine fish, they need a very specific setup with high current; temperate water; high oxygen saturation.

They are lovely fish, but if you were to consider getting one, any tankmates would need to be comfortable with the above conditions ;)

Same species just different common name.

There are plenty which get considerably smaller than BN's, however price differs extremely between them ans so do there requirements.

Some extremely nice plecs jacko32 has given, unfortunately alot will be generally unattainable unless you LFS is a good importer lol. Alot will still be unsuitable but there are many on the list that could work.

What are the actual dimensions of the tank?, i dont usually consider any plec apart from pitbulls to be suitable for anything under a 2 foot long tank. What are the actual planned tank mates, what sort of filtration?, what planned temperature do you intend to keep the tank at? and lastly what decor and substrate?.

I know alot of questions lol, sorry about that :p but to give an actual species that would be perfectly suited requires much more than just a tank size :good:

i just went off the tank size you can source almost all these on pleco forums or aquarist classifieds im guessing the tanks 60cm x 30cm x 30cm

The size is pretty much what i had in mind but thought best to ask just incase lol, no point in giving a whole list of plecs to get hopes up and than shatter them when the tank is found to be to small.

To the plecs i would have to disagree with most would be able to be gotten from AC or plec forums, alot of those BN's would definitely be import only, there wont be a whole load of people keeping them species and if they are there not selling any fry if there breeding.

The hypans are pretty easy to obtain nowadays, plenty of people breeding but prices for some will just be outrageous for a general fishkeeper rather than plec enthusiast. The L250 you have up there is the most pointless lol, that plec you wont get for love nor money no matter how hard you try.

The chaetostoma species you've mentioned i will say are extremely hard to get hold of, most chaetostoma species will probably come in as SP species with no common or L-Number which will be undefined and if they come in with either they will probably be wrong anyways lol, trying to distinguish between certain species will give even the most experienced plec keepers trouble.

As ive said though if the tank is said size there are a few species that could work but i still say alot you mentioned will be very hard pressed to find. If you can find some them please PM me the links to either AC or the forums you have seen them for sale on :), or infact post them on here if it's allowed and the OP can at least have a source for some of these harder to find species :)

Looking up the Chaetostoma you listed, jacko32, has now identified the odd looking one in the mixed tank at Aquajardin... Pretty sure its a tachiraense!

From Germany they could be anything lol, possible 173/236 hybrids i would be mored inclinded to say is far more possible. Ive read that there has only been 8 reported imports of 250's so the likely hood somebody is breeding and selling is quite remote IMO.

260's are stunning fish mate and a superb addition, one of the biggest regrets getting rid of my group a fair while back and been contemplating getting a nice group together recently. Adults tend to be like rocking horse doo to get and young just take sooooo long to grow lol.

Get some pics up when you get some, one of my favs and as i said are absolutely stunning.

BTW, can you PM me the link to the 250's, if they are available i would love to see how much they are going for and what they recon the availability of them are :good:

trying to grow on some L333 there going to take me a good couple of years to get them to a decent size

pm sent mate

Cheers for the link mate, already saw that one and im still skeptical that they are 250's, price does sound about right though at around £4000 but the fish in question isn't actually confirmed to be an actual species as far as i know and speculation to weather it is just a off marked zebra type species. No doubt the fish in question is stunning but there isn't enough info about to confirm one way or another.

Yep been there done that lol, hypans in general just take so long to mature, 333's are quite easy to obtain as adults now so if i was to ever get them again i would try and get hold of adults groups or adults in general. Good luck with them though, hypans are by far my fav species :good:
