please explain exactly what you think is nasty or disrespectuful. i'm sorry if i've offended you but i simply don't understand why you are upset over this. I've read this post several times and can't see anything wrong with anyone's comments

Well poopsydrew, I do apologize for all of this calamity. I hope that you have everything figured out and best of luck too you!

If pointing out the obvious flaws in someone's argument is 'disrespect' and 'a sign of modern societies decline' then so be it. ( )

OK, let me put it another way:
1) Are you a Structural Engineer or otherwise qualified? (yes or no)
2) Have you carried out a thourough inspection of this guys house? (yes or no)

All we are saying is that if *anyone* responding to this thread is suggesting that tank is OK where it is, yet at the same time cannot answer yes to BOTH of those questions questions above, then really they should not be saying that the tank is safe where it is. Also suggesting crude methods of testing for the safety of such a scenario by getting a group of people to stand in one spot for a few minutes is, quite frankly, laughable.

If by someone responding to these idiotic suggestions is an attempt to prevent a downright dangerous situation occuring results in your little feathers getting a bit ruffled, then so be it mate! To me, by many people here trying to prevent such a dangerous situation is a sign of caring. A sign of respect to the original poster and a sign of modern societies incline.

Andy

Once again, you need to read what was written. Having people standing in that spot is not a very good idea in fact i wouldn't do that at all. It was an analogy just to put into perspective how much the tank would weigh.

Once again, you have totally missed the basic point, but whatever, I give up.

point is it is an analogy, but it is a bad one because it is easily mis interpreted and on a site with young members and those with english as a second language you must be careful to clarify what you are saying. and when you come to the possible consequences of someone's house falling down you need to be even more careful.

it is a bad analogy because it is unclear and on a very serious topic, therefore it's perfectly acceptable and IMO not at all disrespectful to point this out and clarify why.

fishkers, I meant no disrespect and apologize if it came across that way. I do see the point you are making that a tank weighs the same as the people but their weight and force exerted is different. So in that sense, I will say that the weight comparison is valid but not that it means that the floor will support the weight of a tank.

Im sorry i even posted this forum, some of you cant argue without getting rude, nasty, or personal. And IMO i wasnt asking for a structural engineers opinion, i really just wanted somebodys opinion on wether or not THEY thought it would be ok. Thanks to all who gave me some input without getting rude. C ya guys later :D

I hope your tank is going to be awesome. I was also thinking you might want to just see whats on the first floor and see if you can find any beams because then you can move it around more. But i'm sure you have it all figured out! :D

In answer to the original question.

1 US gallon of water weighs approx 8.34 pounds.
Therefore, your water will weigh around 50 x 8.34 pounds = 417 pounds give or take a few pounds for the water that isn't in there due to gravel, ornaments etc. So lets say 400 pounds.

Then your tank itself will be somewhere between 75 - 100 pounds.

Gravel + other ornaments maybe 50 pounds

so all in all about 550 - 600 pounds which is the weight of about 4 - 5 adults, a female polar bear or a large male caribou. Gathering from the rather extensive article posted above I would suggest you position your tank next to a load bearing wall and perpendicular to the support beams in the floor. The author of the article felt that tanks up to 50gallons would be fine in the vast majority of situations but of course added that you can never be 100% certain its safe unless you pay someone to inspect the proposed site for the tank.

:good:

I don't think anyone was ever trying to be rude, nasty or personal. The fact is that we can't tell you whether your tank will be ok or not. Yes, a normal floor should hold a tank without any problems but if there are structual issues (termite damage, rotten woods, etc.) then it may not. I'm a realtor and have been on home inspections. You would be surprised and what is sometimes found under the house that you would have never suspected from just looking at the floors and walking on them.

Jonesy and Fishkers,
Thanks you guys very much for your advice and input. I guess theres no need to worry but i will definatley have someone look at the supporrt before doing anything. Oh and jonesy dont worry i will do a fishless cycle!! :good:

ok, see, now specifically omitting all but two people from a public thank you--that's rude. and passive-aggressive. and snide. definitely snide. especially when all of the people you omitted spent time being concerned on your behalf whereas the other's gave poor advice which dismissed legitimate worries.

if you are in fact worried that your tank is too heavy for your floor, then do you really trust an "ok" given by strangers who have never seen your home or tank? don't you think that you should pay a little more attention to the strangers who say "oh, well, we're not really qualified to say but here's the type of professional that could help you out"? heck, one of these guys even posted a link written by an informed authority who says that the only way to verify that a floor can support a given weight is to have it professionally inspected. or in other words: don't trust strangers on the internet when they say your floor can hold 600+ lbs continuously for the next two years.

Hey everyone relax, this topic has gotten ridiculous! poopsydrew said he got what he wanted so everyone needs to let it drop! Everything has been fixed and everything is okay lets move on.
