I never thought that my betta would ever get finrot...but I think he does. At first I noticed one of his fin rays (he's a CT) was really curled up. After the curly bit dropped off. So now he has TWO shorter rays. Also one of his fins has a bite out of it  I only have a cycled 3 gallon tank for him and no hospital. I checked in my betta first aid kit and i foud bettafix and malachite green. Does fish medicine expire? My malachite green expired last year and my bettafix is going to expire in 2 months.

P.S. I also noticed him acting wierd...swimming really fast and stuff and zooming across the tank.

Could it be the heater causing a tiny part of his tail to shorten? I heard that bettas can get a bit burnt.

I wouldn't use any meds, unless his tail gets worse.
If it looks like his tail is still rotting away, then proceed with an antibiotic.
Yes meds expire.

You should try keeping his water clean, make sure there isn't anything in the tank that is cutting his tail (like a fake plastic plant or a sharp edge to a decoration or something like that)... and yeah... his tail should grow back no problem.

It sounds like his tail is already growing back?
And with the bite... are there any other fish in the tank?
Have you noticed him biting his own tail? Sometimes bettas will start chewing on their own tail. Not sure why exactly.
Are you sure it's a bite? My bettas have gotten holes in their tails before b/c they flared alot and would pretty much blow out their tail causing holes in them.
They heal back no problem though.

Okay see how his tail fin, has a "bite" in it? Is that the early stages of fin rot?
