Hi

I bought 2 parrot cichlids last weekend (8 days ago). They were both pale blue. I came home and instantly wanted to find out more about them so jumped on the internet. The shop said they'd live quite happily with my other fish (4tetras, angel, molly, barb, plec..all I have had for over a year, the survivors of a disaster that I don't like to think about too often). I was absolutely horrified and mortified to find out about the possibility that they may have been dyed and did some extensive research that did nothing to alliviate these concerns.

I called the shop (a highly reputable shop) who assured me they would not be dyed explaining how some colours come about. Also, they were not anything like the bright colour suggested by most web sites. They were/ she is a very light blue with a darker blue strip and faint rosy bellies and gills.

Now I find one dead already (she was bought with a "tatty" tail, a detail I missed until I bought them home but decided to love her anyway).

Can anyone shed any light on this matter as I'm indeed beginning to think they were dyed and I may lose the other one???

Thank you.

:hi: to the fourm. Introduce yourself in the newbie section.

The one probably died due to stress and disease from the rough transportation.

It might have been dyed, seeing as how not all lfs are truthful...

Sorry I can't help you out, I just wanted to tell you about the newbie section. :/

i know that a lot of parrot fish are dyed but i really don't know if that's true in your case. maybe you can post a picture?

I'd guess that they were once dyed, and it had started to fade. All dyed fish, if they live long enough, return to their normal, natural colors after a few months.

Your female probably died from the stress of transport, and the fact that she's dyed probably contributed. Remember, dyed fish have weakened immune systems and are more likely to die of stress and disease.

I hope your other fish makes it through alright -- ;)

Good luck!

Thanks everyone.

I'm not so worried about the one that survived now as she is one feisty little fish!!
Also, the others seem to be happy too so hopefully all will be fine..............
Thanks.

Try asking for info here..from what I've heard there are parrots that are naturally a gray/blue hue...I don't know as I've not had one myself..
