Please Help?!

i've had a my tank for a few months now, i've put sand in there yesterday and it's all cloudy like so bad i can't really see my fish.

i gave it a clean beforehand but it's still this bad.

what can i do?

Hi Tigress and to TFF,

I assume you are filtering the tank? If so, the filter will take care of it, probably within a few days.

You could try changing some water too if its really annoying you.

I don't think the health of the fish is in doubt because of it, so i wouldn't worry too much.

Yes Welcome, and agreed, it should clear up - the more you rinsed the gravel, the sooner

i've tried changing the water it's clearing up a bit, still looks really bad though.

Try taking some water from the tank into a bucket and then rinsing your filter sponges in it. This should eliminate some of the gunk already caught by your filter, and probably speed up the process.

Patience is the key. Don't worry, you're not alone. Its near on impossible to clean sand enough that it doesn't make the water cloudy. I cleaned mine for 4 hours and it still done the same thing!

well my fish tank has nearly cleared now, i can now see my fish and the back wall lol

still a little cloudy but i'm hoping it will go with water changes.

i put sand in there so my plecs can't rip up the plants, now they are moving the sand everywhere i can't win lol

Where did you buy your sand i bought play sand in argos.washed it for twenty minutes plonked it in to the tank and hey presto it was as clear in about five minutes

That may be your problem - the sort of sand used for building isn't the cleanest or the best quality (and for building work, neither does it need to be), so will probably be chock full of dust and rubbish.
Unless there's something in the sand that's specifically doing something to your water chemistry (have you done a pH test?), I wouldn't worry too much, just let the filter do the work. Another couple of days should sort it.

As BTT mentioned, try to squeeze the gunk out of your filter media to stop it getting too clogged up.

I think it would be best removing the sand.Building sand has chemicals and allsorts of stuff that gets into it from the builders yard it.you need play sand which has been wash properly so that its safe for children so its good enough for the aquarium argos sell it £2 for a 15kg bag.A quick wash and dunk it in bobs your uncle and fannys your aunt
