I think our tank is still cycling. We FINALLY got the ammonia under control and it has tested at 0 for the past 2 weeks.

But now the nitrite is off the charts.

Nitrate is 10.

Aside from regular water changes, how can we fix this problem? A coworker suggested that we get another filter for the other side of our tank. She thinks that will take care of any problems and we'll have perfect water conditions.

Not a bad idea....

Does anyone have two filters?

We are very good about rinsing our filter floss in old tank water after a water change to make sure nothing is clogged and so we are keeping all of the good bacteria.

Thanks for your help!

For a 30 gallon I don't think you need two filters, just make sure the one you have is a good one and working properly. An Emperor 280 is what I have for a 42 and would work well for your tank size.

Water changes are a must to get it back down and then be sure to do regular vacumings, don't over stock and don't over feed.

All should work out fine.

Read about the cycling process everything you are talking about is normal for the cycling process and another filter wont do anything at this point in time.

nitrites with a reading of 10 and that many fish in a cycling tank sounds like a bit of a problem. Try and get your hands on some Bio-spira or gravel form an established aquarium quick!

I think the only thing another filter would do is give the bacteria another prime spot to establish and keep particles etc out of the water. From the sounds of it if you added any fish they may have over loaded your bio filter and the bacteria need to adjust

NitrAtes are 10, Nitrites are at 4.5.

I'll just wait it out and do regular water changes until it's finished cycling.

Hope no one dies in the process!
