hey.. because i did well in my GCSE's got payed s im gunna buy myself a ps3 :good: butafter doing some research ive found that only the 60GB version has got backwards compatability so that it can also play playstation 2 games. but i thoght anything over 40GB could do it?

also apparently they've stopped making the 60 GB model now and the only place i can find a good price on it is amazon! so any help would be appreciated :good:

just found out that any new models of the ps3 they bring out..including the 80 GB wont include backwards compatability..so it looks like ill be buying the 60 GB

I thought they were all backwards compatible for games but the controllers were the sticking point. The PS3 has wireless controllers and the earlier models had cables. Due to the PS3 being wireless you can't plug any of your old controllers into it and have to buy new guns and steering wheels to suit. But the games should all work because the PS3 uses a hi-definition laser that can read CD, DVD, & Hi-def disks.

You've kind of answered your own question, although as somebody who hasn't got a current gen console yet i'm wondering why your not getting a 360 instead? It has better exclusive games in my opinion and the online part is loads better... and its cheaper too!

If your buying it for back compatability something to consider is everybody that i know who choose a ps2 over a xbox because of the back compatability have never played any ps1 games on it, because newer better versions of their favorite games were released and they play them instead. The only original xbox game my friends have played on their 360 was halo 2 before halo 3 was released... now they don't bother with any! Its one of those features that looks good on paper but very rarely gets used, which is why i think Sony have dropped it.

Sorry colin. The 60GB was the only one that had backwards compatibility for some reason. 40GB 20GB and 80GB dont. 40 doesnt have mem card readers. 20 doesnt have wifi or cards. 80 has everything else.

From what I've heard it's not even garunteed that you'll be able to play all the ps2 games. We just kept our old ps2 when we got the new one for some of our favoirte games.

Ive just asked on a gaming site and they too have said its only the 60 GB model that has back compatability..the only problem is they have stopped making this model  luckily ive found one on amazon for a good price :good:

the reason im not getting a 360 is because all the people i know who've got them have had to get them repaired someway or another because they keep crashing..also because im familiar with the controls on PS etc...

thanks for the replies :good:

looks like Sony screwed up badly in this one. They brought out the PS2 with backwards compatibility and it was a huge success. People bought it for exactly that reason, you didn't have to buy any new controllers. Then they bring out the PS3 and only some of them are backwards compatible. The dic heads. They really screwed up.

you dont need to buy new controlers for ps3 you can buy wireless ones but the old ones work fine :good:

I no alot about gaming, and i have to say, xbox 360 are designed to a very high standard. Xbox 360 anyday over a ps3. ps3= to much money for what your playing

PS3 - built in WIFI
PS3 - Free access to DLC
PS3 - built in web browser
PS3 - Blu-ray/dvd player
PS3 - rechargeable controllers
PS3 - HDMI as standard (only 360 elite has that)
PS3 - card reader built in

360 - Wireless adaptor £50
360 - DLC - £40 a year
360 - no web browser
360 - dvd player only
360 - controllers are heavy and need AA batteries
360 - standard connection
360 - no card reader

I am on my second 360 (first one died on me), I hardly play it now and I would choose the PS3 100% of the time over the 360

Em, i suggest mods close this, i can see where its going...

why? its a debate, not an auguement.

I have posted only facts and given my opinion.

I have both, PS3 and 360, so I think I can make a fair comparison, supposed to those supporting (and owning) just the one console
