what types of fish get along with angelfish? i have some babies that are quarter sized in a 20 gallon (3 or so) and i was wondering what i could put with them. there is no way i can put anything small in my 46 gallon, because my huge angelfish will eat anything and everything except for 2 neons who they were born with and grew up with, and think they are their uncles or something. its weird, because i can buy 3 new neons and put them with the other two, wake up the next morning, and only those two are still there...hmm.

anyway, what could i put in with the young angelfish? my teacher has some platys that she needs homes for, so i was just wondering.

a 20 gallon tank is way too small for one angel, never mind several. You would be best to re-home the angels and take the platys off your teachers hands.

...that is not my question.

i am asking if platys can live with angels. there are the size of a quarter, and once they get bigger they go in the larger tank.

...............NO platys are fin nipping lil fish...i had 2 angels with a hand full of plats and they nearly killed my male angel....thats ok though....my blue lobster ate most of em

And just for the record, a 20 gallon high is fine for one angel, maybe two but that's about the lower limit. Best if they're a pair to prevent the angels from fighting when older and more territorial. You could get 4-6 small ones, wait for them to pair off, then return the rest. A 20 gallon long is not so good though because the size of their fins demands a higher tank for swimming space (usually about 18" is good).

Not so sure about the platys though...I stopped keeping livebearers long ago once I realized they breed like rabbits and aren't too hardy on top of it, and I don't remember if I ever kept them with angels.

I've kept platys & angels in larger tanks, 55 gallon+. They never bothered each other, and you will never see any platy fry with angels.

Depends on how big the angels are. Would think the platies might bother them if they're too small.

they were full grown...the nipped him down to nothing...he looked like a baby after they trashed him....but oh well like i said the plats served a purpose! they made great food for my lobster!...although he had to catch them first lol...kinda funny to watch but..after that  he eats funny

alright thanks guys...

i know all about angels and breeding and things like that, i just have only had angels and well...two neons who love life...but besides that ive never had a livebearer.

how are platys fin nippy? when they are not agressive at ALLLLLLL...... and i didn't appreciate how rude that person was!!!!!

I completely disagree. Platys are not fin nippers AT ALL in my experience, and never have I read anywhere but on this thread that they are! I keep four with a pearl gourami (who has long finnage and feelers which could be likened to an angel in a way) and my platies never come near him or bother him in the slightest. Those horny buggers are too preoccupied with chasing each other around to be bothered with anybody else!

As long as you've got the space, I'm sure platies will be fine with angels.

I think the water requirements are slightly different for angels and platies, angels preferring soft water and platies being more of a moderately hard water fish, but platies are supposedly quite hardy so maybe that's not a big issue. I had platies with 5 angelfish for well over a year and never saw a nipping problem between them. If anything, it was the angelfish chasing away the platies, but that was really only at breeding time for the angels, and I never saw the platies nipping anything other than occasionally plants.
