Platy With Ich

Annastasia You are such a sweetheart I really appreciate all of your concern and Hugs :) On the 20 gal. I used aquarium salt as per directions and I dont know for sure what was swimming all over the tank it looked like a snow storm in there with white particles that looked a lot like table salt. I put my mechanical filters in and now its gone so Im not sure what it was or is. I am doing 30 to 50% water changes daily on the 55 and things so far look really good. The 20 gallon is clear now but not sure where to go from here. I will slowly raise the water temp in the 55 to 85 . Again thanks for all your help and concern. :) Jimmy

Awww, no problems. I know how hard it is with ich. :)

It could have been a bacterial bloom. Since you said like snowstorm, I am going to guess whitish cloudy? So I would guess Bacterial bloom since you are cycling. :) No worries, that's good.

SO glad to hear the 55 is getting better! Things are looking up! :D Once you raise the temperature, it should speed up the life cycle even more. You just have to make sure you kill it now, before it has a bunch of kids and then they all go to live in Fish-ville. I would continue treating for at least a week from now, just to make sure you killed it all.

*crosses fingers and sends good fishy wishes Twobeards way*

If you ever have any more problems, or if you just feel down from treating all the ich or cycling or anything, feel free to PM me. :) Don't hesitate.

Edit: By the way, all signs of ich are off my Platy, just treating the tank now to kill it. No signs of it though, and all the fish are perky and happy.

Hi,

Been reading your posts and might give the salt trick a try, as white spot has claimed my 2 kissing gouramis and 1 blue dwarf. I have been treating with Protozin, but it’s not getting any better.

I am a little new to keeping fish and I am guessing you done mean just sea salt that you put on your dinner !!!

Do I need to go and get some special salt from my LFS?

Thanks,

Neil

What fish do you have in your tank, Neil? As not all fish can handle salt, namely Loaches and Catfish. :)

Nope, not sea salt for your table! There is special aquarium salt you can get at your LFS. When you do water changes (I'd recommend daily, or every other day) just add in the amount of salt for the gallons you put back in, not the whole tank.

Best of luck treating it, I have had great luck in the past using salt! :D

Annastasia I again want to thank you for your kindness and help. Everything is looking good so far no signs of ick and all is well. I am going to continue medicating for a week just to be sure. I am so glad to hear that your platy is ok :D , I hate loosing fish not so much the cost the fact that they are my friends so need me to look after them and care of them. That probably sounds pretty stupid coming from a 54 year old male but thats how I feel. They can make a terrible stressful day go away by just watching them swim around and being happy. That makes me happy and destresses me. :*) Its one of the best hobbies ever! I truly and sincerely thank you for being there for me as you wouldnt believe how much it means to me. Again Thanks so much. Jimmy

I thought it would be something i need to pick up from the LFS.

Well i only have a red dwarf gourami left as my last blue one died today!

All in all i lost about £50 in fish over the last 10 days!!!! I had two tanks with ich!

Still i think things are on the up as the remaining gourami seems ok and my 2nd tank looks clear now for a few days... I will keep treating the tank with suspected ich for a few days to make sure its gone.

Cheers,

Neil

Twobeards - Awww, you're welcome. :D Glad to know I helped! And I'm also glad to know your tank is looking better! Hopefully you won't have any more problems for a long long time. Yeah, I know, fish are great. I've been sick these week so mostly I've been watching all my fish. I have two tanks in the bedroom...so I can lie in bed and see my community, and my Wild Bettas. :)

Neil - I'm so sorry to hear that. :( Definitely keep treating the tanks, as once the ich is in the free-swimming stage it can be killed before it attachs on to the fish again. If you don't kill it now...it will just attach and then the meds won't do any good. I'd treat for at least a week more, if possible. And keep up on the water changes! And salt IS good to have on hand, very useful for all kinds of diseases and ailments!

Hello Neil!
Man loosing fish is no fun but You have to keep on batteling the ick. I had decided that fish were important to me and I have alot of money invested in my equipment and I wasnt going to give in. Out side of my shooting sports thats all I have and I enjoy it tremendously. I wish you luck and take Anastasia's advice it worked for me. Jimmy
