I have a 6 gallon set up with two platies (male and female, not yet full sized), a baby guppy, 6 pygmy cories and an otto. My tank has live plants. My platies have been nipping at my plants until they tear, then eat at them! I feed them twice a day. Is there a reason why they are doing this? Do platies just eat plants? The tank isn't overcrowded, they don't seem distressed. I recently moved the tank to my college dorm, could that have caused them to be a little stressed? They certainly don't look like it. All the fish are healthy. :)

It is not at all unusual to see healthy livebearers nipping at plants and even eating some of the plant. I would hazard a guess that the plant is a val. For some reason, they are the plant that my platies seem to like best as food.

Platies are omnivores - they eat both plants and meat.

25% of my platies diet includes flake food "Sera Flora" and vegetables. With this in their diet, they vandalise the plants less.

Well I was planning to add some live plants to my 10 gallon tank. Would someone please help me on which types I should go for?
The females I got seem to be pregnant ... and I wanna give some hiding places for the young fry's to hide in.
I have natural gravel in the tank ... should I be adding something else to it? any kind of sand or soil?
I'm new to this ... so all help would be appreciated !!

One more thing ... I just feed them flake food ... any recommendations to other types of food I may add to their diet?

Cabomba is a good plant for fry to hide in, has saved no ed of my guppy fry recently
