Wondering if anyone could help.. we originally had 1 female platy and 1 male platy. We were unaware it was best to keep more females to males ( from being new to the hobby) however, the male began swimming after her a lot so we went back and got 3 more females as we have a tank big enough and wanted to give the original female some time to rest. Since adding the new platys, he has paid some attention to them but they hide often so he continues to chase the original female platy. Is there anything we can do? Do the males tend to swim after females more if they are pregnant?

Hey :)

How large is your tank ?
Platies are very active swimmers and males are very often harassing females.
Also, pics of your tank would be helpful.

Well, it's a natural behavior to start with. The tighter the open swimming space, the more this behavior will occur. It doesn't matter wether a female is pregnant or not to a male. But a female that is willing to mate does spread a scent that will attract a male. In such cases, the male will reach for the vent of the female with his mouth before he'll move his gonopodium in the direction of her vent.

Sorry for the late response, it has been eventful in our fish tank🙂 our female platy did give birth to fry, the male has stopped following her since this and she is now happily swimming around the tank and so is he. We’ve managed to get some fry out that we could and we’ve put them in our other set up tank so they seem fine for now. However, there is still two we see in our main tank which seem to be hiding from the platy’s in plants so hopefully they continue to survive. Thank you:)
