I am new to keeping fish. I had three Platy, one male and two female. One of the female's belly squared off, she had the white opening at the anal fin and acted non-social. I put her in the fry net, and she dropped 6 fry, and then started acting hyper again. I released her into the tank, and she swam around, dropped a few more fry and everything seemed normal again.

The next morning I found her dead. All of the water specs were fine. Was it the stress of labor that caused her to die?

I have had very similar problems with my female platies as well. I hope somebody has some answers, b/c I haven't been able to find any cause for it yet.

im not 100% percent but maybe its because you put her back in the main tank where the males would chase the hell out of her and she has just been through a big ordeal giving birth maybe she was far tooo stressed and gave in

i might be wrong but sumone will put me right if im wrong hopes this helps

That seems plausible. Next time I will keep the mama safe and alone for longer. Thanks.

Are the water parameters OK?
Generally, you should have 3 females to every male. 2 is ok, but three would be better. Now you only have one, so perhaps you could get 2 more to even out the male's attention.
How large is your tank?

My tank is 20 gallons. Two more females would keep the male occupied or distracted enough to not stress any one female too much?

The water parameters are good. No ammonia, no nitrites, pH about 7.2, everyone else is happy.

It's just that some males get a little aggressive, and it would be best if the aggression was spread out.
Everyone else? How many inches of fish do you have? (About)

I would agree with that, once mine has had a fry i leave it in a breeding net for 48hours or so. Then let them back into the main tank. :good:

yeah i agree too, you shouldn't put the mother back into the main tank for at least 24 hours after birth

Thank you, that is very helpful. A new aquarium is a learning hobby. That is one of the reasons it is holding my interest so much.

Also I can see that you have 4 zebra danios and those are semi agresive and superactive I don't think it's good idea have those in the same tank with platies...if I'm wrong correct me......

platys IME often die when they have given birth, it takes a heck of a lot out of them, and they are not usually in excellent condition ( i mean most are bought from LFS already pregnant)
i think and excellent boosting diet, and tip top water params would be the way to go as soon as you see that a platy is pregnant ( im not for a moment implying that you dont do your best for your fish) but as with bettas breeding, they get bulked up and fed good food ready for the process, i know its different but dosent mean to say it wouldnt work.

and dont forget feeding them up dosent mean over feeding - as if you do that your water wont stay good :)

also moving her from tank>net, then net >tank would be very stressfull for her, hnece the need to try to build her up before

sorry for your loss, i know just how you feel :( hope all goes well with the fry :)

shelagh xxxx

Aww... thats sad, now the babies don't have a mommy... how are they doing now? :]

the fry will be fine without her, she would have eaten them given the chance

I've had zebra danios in the tank with my platies for ages and I haven't noticed any aggresseive behavior towards the other fish, they just chase each other. I also agree with the male - female ratio affecting the females after they give birth. I currently have one male and two females, and the male chases one of the females all over the tank. The last female he did that to died... so I definitely need to get more females.
