i saw a tank of tetras labelled up as platinum tetra today, they were quite small and very very silvery looking with a black dot at the start of the tail fin.
im looking for a small fish to fit into my shrimp tank that wont eat too many of the baby shrimps
does anybody know anything about them as i cant seem to find a great deal about them on the net.....
do they stay quite small?
will they eat my shrimps?

Does it look like this? srry for the blur they are quick

I had barley found anything on these guys to but i read something about them possibly having skin issues if the water isn't right. I also read they are pretty difficult to keep but for me that are one of the a couple fish that haven't died on me yet.

They stay small unless you put one in a 20 gallon tank by its self to grow it out.
I dont know if they eat shrimp but i dont think so as their mouths are small.

yeah i think they look like them  all ive found out is that in the wild they are prone to skin diseases but are fine in an aquarium....
how big are yours and how long have you had them?

they are probably and inch or 2-3 cm

and i've had them for about a year. they barely grew from when i bought them.

i dont really know about that i think they are but not sure.

Also the ones i have are gold tetras-Hemigrammus rodwayi
and the platinum tetras-Hemigrammus vorderwinkleri
so i guess there different but they might have similarities too.

good luck with your shrimp :good:

after goooling the Hemigrammus rodwayi it looks very much like those.

Do they by any chance look like this:
platinum%20tetras2.jpg

I used to have a shoal of Platinum Tetras (above) and 2 Gold Tetra sold mistakenly as Platinum Tetra (they are similar). I had some Hatchets and Red Crystal and Armano Shrimp. Although active, they tetra were peaceful and never payed attention to the shrimp. Just keep them well fed!
Whats your tanks size?

the tank is an aquaone AR620 90L quite a tall tank and 2 ft wide.

I had them in a 20gallon tank too but it was cube shape. They should be fine as long as you feed them well and keep more than for. This fish looks lovely in dark aquariums. I bought them because they are so eyecatching, tiny and they looked 'vunerable?'LOL

The fish is is closely related Gold Tetras (H.Rodwayis)so food, breeding and water stats are roughly the same.

ive never seen them before today and they really caught my eye too, they almost look like they have been painted or wrappedin foil
do you think that they would go for the baby shrimp as they get to about 2 inches dont they?if they will leave them alone then maybe i can spare enough room for 6 or 7 :hey:

Ive looked into these in the past there are two species that get traded under that name Hemigrammus rodwayi as you said and H.vorderwinkleri - I cant remember which but one is the gold tetra but tank bred and when the gold tetra is tank bred they come out silver rather than gold due to lack of a parasite found in the wild that attaches to the young fish and turns them gold!

The difference between the two are that one is much smaller than the other and looks "naked" and really smooth where as the other grows a bit larger and has clearly defined scales.

Nice little fish though :) I reckon adults will be safe but the babies might get gobbled a little.

the guy in the lfs said that they wont grow much bigger than what they were and they were quite small but do we trust some lfs knowledge....? they were just labelled up as platinum tetras and no latin name at all.
i wouldnt want to buy them for them to munch through my shrimps as the tank was set up mainly for the shrimps but as its quite a large tank for shrimps it just seems empty without something swimming around.....

If they are well fed , they wont go after the shrimp, maybe just buy 1 tetra and next day buy some more if it goes ok.

My personal way to recognise Gold tetra from Platinum are;
Gold Tetra are usually cheaper (£1.50-£2.50) than Platinum Tetra(£2.50+)
Gold Tetra dont always have the distinct black spot, Platinums always do.
Gold Tetra may have some white on the edge and tips of the fins
Platinums are smaller.

the thing is the lfs isnt so much of an lfs as its about a 40 minute drive away

so if i go for them ill have to get the whole group.....

i think my minds made up and im going back tomorrow to get a group of 10 :good:

they did look "naked" and not scaley as mentioned by wills and they were small and had a black dot just infront of the tail fin.... so im guessing that they are Hemigrammus rodwayi

ill try and get some pics when ive got them home :good:
