i have a 2.5 gallon tank that i bought for my baby. i read on the site that platies need a 5 gallon minimum tank. is it possible that they could live in a 2.5 gallon? there are 2 at the lfs that i would like to get.

That tank is really to small for anything but a betta. What about upgrading to a 5 gal?

I have a 2.5 gallon with 2 guppies and they are fine. I personally don't think 2 platies would be over crowded. But if you get a male and a female watch to make sure he isn't harassing her constantly and have plenty of plants for her to hide in. Also keep in mind that they will breed and you will have to upgrade to a bigger tank.

A 2.5 gallon tank is (as the others have said) is really too small for most fish, as they like to be with friends....

Male Betta Splenden (Siamese Fighting Fish) would be great (only one male per tank though) and are happy with the smaller tank and on their own.

Or

What about planting the tank quite heavily and having a couple of really small fish like Tetras - you could have 4 of these,

Or

Bumble Bee Gobies - most of these like Brackish Water, but you can get freshwater ones.

Or

Pencil Fish - these are quite long (1.5") but produce so little waste you could probably have 5 or 6 in your tank.

Let us know what you decide on.

Good Luck

Neil.
