I went to the pet store today to get a goldfish for my goldfish tank. Problem was that the only goldfish they had were so much smaller and younger than my three goldfish therefore I did not get a new goldfish.
I saw that there were platies on sale. I decided to get two red wag platies (a boy and a girl) and two girl sunburst platies. They only charged me for both sunburst platies but only one red wag platy. I brought them home and put them in my guppy tank. They are all seem to get along well, except one of my male guppies was checking out one of my new platies. Is that normal? Is it okay to put platies in the same tank as guppies? Hopefully they will not interbreed.

Platties and guppies cannot breed as they are from two differen't families. Guppies will usually attempt to mate with any female fish that crosses their path, especially another livebearer. Guppies and mollies, however, can interbreed.

Guppies and mollies (and endlers) are in the genus Poecilia and can interbreed; platies and swordtails are in the genus Xiphophorus and can interbreed.
The majority of enders on sale in shops are actually endler-guppy hybrids; commercially raised mollies tend to be hybrids of at least one species of molly; and a lot of the swordatils on sale are actually swordtail-platy hybrids.

But a Poecilia cannot breed with a Xiphophorus.

Male livebearers will try to mate with each other in a male only tank, and with any other fish in a community tank.
