I think some of the ones for sale now are made from a Lead/copper Lead/zinc alloy as it's more resilient to attacks from weak acids, I've also seen Zinc and Magnesium masses for sale, I guess rocks would also be a good alternative, they're readily available and you can pick up inert ones for free outside.
