Most of the inappropriate aquarium plants sold in the aquarium trade are a byproduct of the growing techniques for most of what we use. Apart from a few true aquatics such as vallis most of our plants are grown emmersed. That way CO2 is readily available from the air and the stems tend to be stronger, making for better looking plants in the shop.
The side effect of this is that the environment is perfect for growing lots of bog garden type plants, so they end up in the same system and often get lumped into selection orders from the growing houses.
It does mean that most of them make excellent palludarium plants, although the intention of growing them would have been for the house plant market.
