The thing with Vallis, is that it seems to be a plant that some can grow with no effort, whilst others try hard and fail.
IME it prefers hard water to soft,root tabs or decent substrate may also help.
As far as other plants go, read this, and go for easier plants.Google images to see what you actually like the look of.

Carpeting plants need good flow to get nutrients down to them.
