I have sand or gravel, or a mix, depends on the system. There's laterite in it too, but it's so old now, that I'm sure it's useless.

After three years? Well, that's encouraging.
soil colloids are what give the substrate the negative charge, therefore allowing CEC to take place. As far as i know CEC should continue to take place, due to elements such as SO4- NO3- Cl- and PO3- etc in the water which would act as an anion, or stick to the surface of the colloids.
