So my tank is 1/3 sand which when I originally planned it was not going to have plants, so there is basically no dirt under the sand (the other 2/3 is dirted)

I am wanting a mid/background plant to put in the corner where there is just sand. So ideally a plant that does not require its nutrients from its roots I guess.
The slower growing/lower light requirement the better
Its a low tech tank dossed with liquid CO2 daily, and soon to be fertz.

Side requirement is that it does not grow too tall as it will be under the filter outlet (the outlet is pointing diagonally/accross towards the middle-front/bottom of the tank so should't affect the plant unless it reaches the surface)

Thanks in advanced!

Java fern sounds like a good candidate, however I'd put it on a piece of wood/rock. However most plants I know of that do well in those conditions grow tall.

Yeh I was thinking about the Java Fern. Might get a big chunk of wood and have lost on that.

+1 on Java, and also Amazon Swords will do well in sand, as do Rotala Wallichii

Amazon Swords 'require iron-rich fertilizer' apparently, and I have Shrimp so I'm not sure I can keep the swords in top condition. I like the look of those Rotala's as well

I currently have one amazon sword in my community tank and I don't use fertilizers of any sort and mine is THRIVING! At least 18 leaves and probably a good 14 inches tall

Ah ok well thats good news! I might have to try that then

They don't require Iron rich fertilizer, just a source of food.
The shrimp won't mind how good your plants look either, they're not jealous like that - So no worries keeping them in top condition

Haha fair point! The Shrimp aren't shallow like that!

Ok thanks for all your pointers. Shall hopfully get some tomorrow :)

No plant on this planted 'needs' a nutrient rich substrate. Just make sure you dose the water column with ferts.
