 Hi I have Platy's and Guppy's I've just added some live plants to my 40 gal tank I'm not sure on the names of the plants. My question is do fish normally peck at or eat at the plants?

plattys and guppies noramlly eat the algae off them but not the plants themselves other fish will eat them tho

From what i've read its fine for them to eat it, Platies are omnivorous so they'll eat plants too, plus its natural! I have a few platties and they enjoy eating algae too, be thankful they're helping clean the tank :p

My swordies are eating my Java and Willow moss -.- And I mean the plants, I have no algae anyway.

Typical common livebearers will pick at plants and any other surface almost constantly. For a plant person, the action means nothing. The livebearers are after the micro-organisms that normally live on plants and other surfaces. They do not "eat" plants at all but will not hesitate to eat dead plant matter or similar non-plant materials.

Well, these lyretails seem to be nibbling the green leaves off the moss... Saw my lyretail reducing one whip of the moss to a stick.

I always thought it was my platys destroying my plants as they were always picking at them, but it seems they were just nibbling bits of algae etc off the leaves, it was nasty little pond snails doing all the destroying.

Since I put a few assassin snails in, I have noticed a significant increase in my plants health.

My ramshorns are mostly on the glass / filter though and I see my lyretails taking off leaves in their mouth. My apple snails, however, eat the whole whip like it's spaghetti.

I dont think guppies will nip at your plants but the algae on it like when i got my first guppies in my tank they would nip at the suckshen cups on my heater as there was slime on it (it may of came from my stress zyme)
