how to avoid them? how not to overfeed? how to solve a planaria problem? just curious thanks! :)

Planaria live in the substrate in every fresh water aquarium or pond. They feed on organic matter like uneaten food, dead fish, dead plants etc. They also eat fish eggs.

When you feed fish you should only offer a little bit of food and the fish should eat it all within a few seconds. Then offer a little bit more and they should eat that straight away. Keep offering small amounts of food and let it get eaten. When the fish are no longer racing over to the food then stop feeding them.

If you see lots of worms crawling over the glass, it is an indication there is something wrong with the water that has driven them out of the substrate, usually poor water quality or chemicals from medications.

The easiest way to control them is by limiting uneaten food in the tank and doing regular tank maintenance (gravel cleaning, water changes & filter cleaning).

cleaning won't be much of a problem since i recently received a python water change system from my grandparents so now from every two weeks, i can clean weekly. thanks alot to you both and merry christmas! :)

I don't like Python gravel cleaners because they put straight tap water back into the aquarium and people regularly chlorinate their fish when they use them. You can use the gravel clean part to clean the substrate but do not use it to fill the tank with straight tap water. Fill up buckets with water and add dechlorinator, aerate for at least a couple of minutes (preferably 30 minutes) then add that water to the tank.
