Pit Bull ban in Ontario...

I figured I'd get some slack here, but I'm not one to hide my opinion.

Statistically, sheperds, rots and pits and wolf hybrids are THE most dangerous dogs there are. I don't see how that could ever change. You said it yourself, you'd hate to see what your dog would do to someone who was going to hurt/bother you......

The difference is, these dogs are very strong.......almost too strong. They can kill and they have........

I said that I do feel bad for the dogs, but I feel worse for the innocent children.......

JMHO!!!

:dunno:

I think the thing is that these dogs are conditioned by their surroundings to become the animals they are, very much like humans. To condemn a specific breed would be useless because some other animal or breed could do the same harm. I understand what you're saying though silver. That's why there are different classes that dogs are in: ie working class, toy class, hunting class... etc. But having been close to rottweilers and pit bulls since a child, you learn as well as them that you have to set limits. But isn't that with any creature that you make as a pet? You own pets for their qualities and uniqueness to fit your lifestyle. To say it's alright for one person to own an animal because of breed and to condemn another because of breed I would have to say that impedes on a person's rights. Everyone's needs are different. And like humans, all animals are different. Can you narrow down human races as you would breeds? I believe you can. Can you condemn a race of humans? I don't think it fair to condemn an animal because of breed.

If an innocent child is hurt because of a specific animal, well, like humans, that animal should be punished. It all comes down to individuality.

Exactly. You don't see them banning rotties, dobies, chows, sheps and others in most places, just pitbulls and the like. People are taking the easy way out by blaming the breed, when it's the people they should blame. Yet all these people want to do is talk about how vicious the breed is, how it's not safe, but they often don't think about the fact that there were people behind the raising and taking care of the dogs that do the stuff that makes them look vicious. Killer dogs don't just appear like magic out of nowhere. It isn't right that children have been hurt and killed by dogs, but it's also not right to act like it was only because of the dogs breed, and getting rid of that one breed will stop it all.

Statistically, Chichuahua's and Poodles are more 'unstable' (when put thru a standard temperament test) than American Pits Bull terriers, while the cute cuddly Dalmations are almost on par.
If they want to ban this dog based on proven facts rather than negative public perceptions of the breed, then I'd guess at least 25-50% (was too lazy to count) of the dog breeds out there should be banned as well.

my sister owns a staffie cross bull mastif..shes huge she comes up to mid thigh on me and is big..she looks mean and has a very loud bark...

but shes the biggest softie i know... sure she barks at u if she does not know u but shes also wagging her tail.

when we walk her she is muzzled because when she was a pup a golden lab attacked her..now if she sees one she goes for it..so the muzzzle has to be on when we walk her on the beach or around the streets.....

shes big shes evil looking she sleeps in my bed :) i would hate for some one to take her away because she looked meen

This is so wrong. An animal should never be punished for something it has no control over. You wouldn't kill your child is it killed anything, would you? And that is the punishment which would happen. Anyway, a child has reason, and an animal, if provoked enough, will attack a child, and I don't blame it one bit. If a child is provoking a dog, I say it deserves to be attacke.d

Who said anything about killing? Punishment does not always equal death. Even humans now that kill, aren't always punished to death. So, we're saying, if your child is attacked by a animal you would want that animal to roam free still? Your argument holds no weight with me. If it were my child, I would want something to happen, but not to all animals of that species, but to that specific animal. Not all the time do people provoke animals in order for them to strike. Some animals are conditioned to do so.

I'm not arguing this, we'll agree to disagree ;)

I’m not sure this is true or not but I heard “somewhere” that certain dog’s (like pits) may not have a developed skull. Their brain keeps growing but their skull doesn’t hence they snap out.
My friend had a pit for seven years and then one morning out of the blue the dog almost ripped his hand off. Sadly the pooch was put to sleep.

i thought that on the other thread concerning this topic someone posted statistics saying the family favourite (golden retriever/labrador) was more likely to attack than a pit or GSD?

Why not ban all big dogs on the offchance they might attck someone? I work in a lps and dogs are welcome. true I will avoid staffies but thats because Im not partial to them. I also tend to avoid most spaniels and retrievers, that is I wont go out of my way to pet them. Now, a collie is a different matter...

But its all down to the people who own them. there is on e particular golden retriever who will try and take your hand off if you go anywhere near it but lots of big dogs with bad reps will be fine with you. especially boxers and mastiffs.

Hi Everyone!I live in ontario and I dont really agree with the ban.I think they should start promoting more responsible pet ownership because that is definatly the bigger problem.Especially with pitbulls,I find I see so many kids with them and they just seem like more of a symbol than anything else.Pitbulls are intelligent and strong and need training if they are going to be household pet, also early soicilization with people, children and other dogs. Now on a more personal note i have a female brindle boxer and ppl literally will cross to the other sie of the road to avoid walking by her.I swear some ppl look absolutly terrified and Iis very annoying because she is the sweetest dog and she is not a pitbull....

the majority of dogs are bred to make certain traits more prominent, whether thats for colour, size , aggressivnes ect. instead of banning dog breeds how about classifing these dogs as dangerous. which might mean you need a certain height fence and them to be muzzled in public.
