hi all can anyone tell me if a piston typ air pump is better than the standard air pumps? has anyone got one and how do you rate it cheers

Generally good, but comparitively noisy!....

Depends on what you consider standard and better. For the price they beat the usual Tetra/Rena singe tank size pumps in the amount of air delivered, but with more noise. A decent linear pump beats them, but at a higher cost, as far as air produced and loudness.

I've got a Dolphin EP-30 I run on & off outside the fishroom, at 30 lpm it is louder than the linear that runs the fishroom putting out 85 lpm. Price wise the quiet linear is $215, the small piston is $40. If you don't mind a little noise go with the piston. My fishroom is under a bedroom, so spending some money to keep the family happy was a good idea so far.
