my bolivian ram has been pretty peaceful so far, though he tends to let the tetras know when they're in his way... but today i dropped a pellet in for him, as i felt he was not getting as much food as the others, being the bottom dweller that he is. he started munching like a mad man, and any fish that came near him was quickly shoved away. but then he started to get REALLY pissed and his dark (brownish) spots as well as the strip on his top fin turned pitch black. he started rushing at all the fish like crazy !! he's a little calmer now, but i really want to get him into a bigger tank when i can afford it. my question is, do you think he would be happier in a slightly smaller tank by himself until i can do so? or should i just leave him in the 10g for now...

I don't have any experience with Rams (but I do think they are lovely looking fish), but from reading your sig I would hazard that you are overstocked, esp with a 10gal.

Other people who come here are going to ask about your water prams, maintenance regieme, how long you have had the tank and any visible problems with the fishes, so you may get a better response if you answer these.

Oh, and maybe ask in one of the Chiclid forums too - those guys know their stuff!!

Rams are territorial which is why he charges at the other tank mates. The 10g is simply too small for him. Add onto that the fact that your slightly overstocked then you can understand why he's acting the way he is.

I wouldn't recommend moving him into anything smaller, you need to move him into a bigger tank.

thanks for the help ! when i got this tank, i wanted to add more fish, trusting the pet stores that told me he would be ok in the 10g with the other fish i had. now that i know more, i wish the guy had told me this in the first place. i can't afford a bigger tank at the moment though i will be getting one a.s.a.p. i don't want my ram to be miserable :(
