P's look quite nice and can be entertaining but boring really.

we had a shoal of 6 nice size ones come into work and they would gladly rip apart a DEAD goldfish, but this would be for about 30 seconds then back to there nervous shoal.

have had more pain scrubbing the algae from tanks with small kribs in nipping at my arms than pirahna.

and there's things alot more dangerous than pirahna that might want a liecence like the electric eel or catfish, stone fish, lion fish, stingrays, all could put in hospital with nasty stings.

A bolt from a electric eel or full grown electric catfish is likely to knock you stone dead!! No need for a hospital then, just get on with the funeral and wake

lol, sounds like fun, many of the customer at work could benefit from stroking either of them!!

i didn't think kill as on the amazon abys program they were just saying knock you unconscious (sp )

I was listening to someone who said that Black Pirannha are a far better to keep than Red Bellied.

I seem to recall that Buck toothed tetras are as well...

On the live feeder, we had a debate on this a while ago and someone emailed the RSPCA and checked the actual law this comes from and I seem to recall it only stated that it is illegal to feed an invertebrate in such a way that causes it unneccesary pain and suffering.

Feeder fish that are often eaten in one bite would hardly fall under that category. And I can almost guarentee the Crown Prosecution Service would not see enough Public Interest to continue a prosecution of it.

Black pirahna are quite rare and expensive...especially if you want a shoal!!....although going back to the peru list i see they have them at £15, at 40 a box they would be a nice starting size, or you could buy 1 at £120 which is 1 per box so would be quite abeast!!

there's about 6 different types on the list all varrying in price.

I remeber that topic Andy was a very vague answer from RSPCA, you have to think what they consider inhumane ways of feeding, do they mean how to go about buying them and feeding it or how the predactor kills it??

A shoal of black pirahna would be a very costly mistake!! Rhoms hate the sight of each other and will fight to the death if placed in the same tank. Black pirahna can only be kept alone.

The good lfs sells them. And I think one of the teachers has them in his classroom... I'm waiting for an excuse to go in and have a look

red bellies are common, in my opinion unless you have a huge tank and lots of time, the piranhas kept on their own (the serras) are much more entertaining. obviously it depends ont he fish but you are more likely to get a finger chaser, active fish that rips food and feeds well.

most red bellies sit there most of the day, especially the first few weeks, but when the become more at home, expect lots of movement.

as for being 'better' to own, it depends, because i think red bellies look awsome when they grow up over 6 months, they get chunky and really impressive.

As for illegal, piranhas are not illegal in the uk, but giving them feeders is... however like most things you can't control who does and doesnt give them feeders, you wouldnt have a bobby on your doorstep if you did, they wouldnt know either way. Mine aren't interested in other fish, they eat tesco's prawns at the moment

Hah, i could kinda imagine going to jail for feeding a piranhas feeder fish, like you are sitting there in the your jail cell and like "Yeah im a real harsh bastard, i fed my fish feeder fish so don't mess with me or i'll shove a guppy down your throat!"

Im not sure about in the UK but in the US it is not illegal to keep or sell Piranah it is only illegal to import them.
