My 2 Piranhas have not eaten for 9 days, since I did a complete water change to clean the tank.
But I put the same water back in afterwards.
I have kept piranhas for over a year now, and this has never happened before I do everything in the same way, (i have even changed the water completly with these same 2 piranhas before and they were fine when they went back in the tank)
I have been giving them there normal food, and different foods incase they had gone off of it, but every 24 hours I am having to net the dead food out.
All my Nitrates, Nitrites, PH and Ammonia levels are spot on.

They are swimming as normal and dont look ill at all, just worried because they have not eaten for over 9 days now.

Any suggestions?

Ryan

why did you change 100% of the water? just a 30% amount once a week is more than enough for any tank.

they may be sulking. some fish do this when you first buy them and bring them home. s soon as they are put in new water they stop eating almost as a protest. ive never heard of a fish starving itself to death yet, so my advice would be to wait one more week. if they dont eat after that then you may have a problem. what do you feed them?

I did not change the water, I drained it out in buckets, cleaned all the tank stones/ornaments and then poured the old water back into the tank, i did this as I needed to move the tank back to its orignal location. and it was very dirty.

They are fed on Mussles usually.

The only think that is new to the tank is I have bought an external filter for the tank, it is the correct size filter for the tank, and all the sponges and carbon things were all washed out 1st.

I have had these piranhas 6 mths, they are not new. They always ate and were fed every other day.

ahh so you have a new filter on the tank? do you have a grasp of the tank cycle? and how it works? did you seed the old filter in anyway? sounds like ammonia poisoning now. until we chat a little more i cant be sure but as soon as you read this carry out a 30% water change and then 10% change every day for the rest of the week. this will keep your fish alive unitl we can fix the problem..

well? go on then what are you waiting for? ;)

i dont understand, a grasp of the tank cycle and seed the old filter in. please coudl you explain

I have done an amoonia test and the water is perfect colour green.

But i have taken your advice and done a 30% water change.

Many Thanks

just looked in before i leave for work. the basics are thet you have bacteria in your filter that cleans the water. if you put in a new filter that dont have the bacteria in (which it wont have for about 3 weeks yet) then the fish are being killing by their own waste. if someone else hasnt left you the links so you can learn what you need to know by the time i get home i will leave the info you need to look at

They have eaten some musscles today (day 10)

When i say green i mean the very light green, could also be called yellow, it is correct to the charts included in the test kit, I am using interpet liquid form easy test kit.

What I have noticed on my bigger piranha this morning was a piece of plastic plant sticking out of its anus, and it is still there this evening, could this have aything to do with this, why has he eaten plastic plant from the aquarium? will this clear up it self (now he is eating).

Ryan

Thanks for your help FBF
