I'm thinking of getting another fish tank and getting some Piranha. Can anyone give me some info on them, like How big a tank I should get, how many I can have living together, what food is best for them, how easy they are to maintain.

Any information would be a great help.

Hi Jolly ,

try posting this question in the characin section , or maybe oddballs . You might get faster responses.

OOOPS, I see it's been moved already .

Sorry, I'm quite new here and wasn't sure where to post it.

My local store are selling the Red Belly ones, and after seeing a tv program on them the other week I really want them. I knew I would have to get a big tank, and have already cleared some space for one :)

would just like to say 1 of my LFS (which i don't tend to use) has one of the hex tanks thats probable about 10 gallon with 6 red bellies in, they don't clean the tank and it looks absolutely rank!!

Good luck.

Red belly piranha are schooling fish when you put them in together put them in at the same size there is a rule 20 gallons per fish so if you get 5 youll need 100 if you get one 20 gallons when they are an inch and lower you can feed them blood worms frozen brine shrimp frozen beef heart ( beef heart makes them grow quick) :D when they get to about three inch feed them larg gold fish feeders when they get bigger then 3 inchs you can feed them baby mice a pork chop you should clean the tank twice a week they crap like crazy make sure to get very very very very very very powerful filtration a good heater will be good 5 watts per gallon if the store sells you a gold or black piranha dont put it with anything not even another gold or black piranha they like to be alone never have two piranha they will kill each other get 1 3 or more when you clean the tank feed them before you clean it try to have tons of decorations plants and hiding spots ion your tank they like to hide after 100 gallons there is a safe way to overcrowd by 10 gallons per fish cycle the tank before you get em they can grow up to 12 inches you can starve them to watch them go into feeding frenzys but i wouldnt recommened it they may tun on each other you should make the tank look real so ythey feel there in there natural surroundingslike rocks sand as gravel live plants a good place to get info is at www.piranha-fury.com well i hope my info has helped you good luck with your new fish

Wow, that is some great information. Thank you very much.

wow lougotzz, those are some awesome tanks you have.

Anyway, I think that only the red bellied piranhas are comercially available (at least in Canada) I'm sure that black piranhas are banned.

Yes that is some good information, however one part I disagree with. You cannot keep even a single piranha in a 20 gallon. Not enough room. Trust me they will not lead happy and healthy lives in a tank that small, considering they grow quite large and are very active. Also they are schooling fish and need company.
