Hi, just wonderin if i could get a little help on which piranah would suit best, a 2x2x2 tank (or are these diamensions just crap?), planted. Im looking into lone piranahs more than shoaling (probably from the Serrasalmus genus), and it seems that theres nothing for this size tank, some need 75-100g tank, then others need smaller, 30-40g tanks...
Also, where would be best to aquaire one of these animals, in the UK?

Thanks alot, Mike

Not sure what 2x2x2 means but a sanchezi would be great for a 60g. They are great fish and pretty active.

A 2' by 2' by 2' planted tank would be amazing.

Ohhh I didn't think of feet. Thanks. I agree that would look pretty nice.

To answer your other question about where to get them... I don't know if it's legal or not in the UK but there should be some online source you can buy them from. I get mine at Shark Aquarium and Aquascape. I only live a couple states away and the shipping is about $50. SA will ship internationally to where it's legal but I bet it would be pretty expensive. If you can't find anywhere in the UK maybe you can send George an email at Shark Aquarium and ask how much it is.

Ok thanks alot, i did mean 2x2x2 feet, so sorry for any confusion...
There was a site that i found on aquarists classifeids that sold piranahs (imported them) but theyve now closed down, cos the guys gonna do discus breeding. Ill have a look on the shark aquarium thing too, thanks gator :good:
What species would you surrgest? Id like it to be either pretty big, or have nice colours, or just be interesting or aggressive.

Thanks alot, Mike

I recomend a sanchezi too, ive got one in a 20g which does it just fine so your 2 foot cube is more than enough.

Ok thanks for the advice CFC, thats the diamond piranah isnt it?
Do they get about 6" in aquaria?
Maybe i could get a smaller tank, like a 25g or something, allthough i have just done a planted tank today, but its only 17g, 24x12x15h so probably too small eh? (P.S There will be a journal going up in the planted forum in a while if anyones interested...)

Thanks alot, Mike

It's hard to tell without scientific names but the diamond piranha is a general term mainly used for S. rhombeus. That one is not good for your tank. Although they are slow growers they do get to 20"+.

Serrasalmus sanchezi is the one I reccomend for that tank but I wouldn't downgrade to 17g if you already have the 2x2x2 for it.

No i dont have the 2x2x2...
However the 17g has been set-up today, so if a sanchezi wasnt too big for my tank then i could have it in there...Would a single sanchezi be ok in a 17g?

Thanks alot, Mike

you could easily try a shoal of 3 red bellied piranahs in a 60... 4 can go into a 75 gallon tank... so 3 should be fine in a 60, but be sure to have extra filtration on it and keep the temp up around the high 70's to low 80's!

I wouldn't keep a sanchezi in a 17g, if that's what you're asking. Too small, imo.

What happened to the 60g tank you started out wanting to know about?

Well the fact that CFC suggested it, and that i have a tank allready, and i can add allready cycled filter media etc, but if 17g is too small then i wont do it, but 3 gallons wouldnt make too much of a differance would it?

Thanks alot, Mike

One of my biggest pet peeves. Pygocentrus nattereri can not be comfortable in anything less than a 75 gallon tank. Just because 4 can live in a 75 gallon tank doesn't mean 3 can live in a 60 gallon tank. It's about the actual size of the aquarium, not the number of piranhas in it.

I've seen it done, and the fish are no worse for wear... so I don't know why that's a pet peve of yours when it happens all the time...
