Fish Symptoms (include full description including lesion, color, location, fish behavior): Chomper is a pink kissing gourami. he is very young according to petsmart. when we first got him we also got two other tropical fish. we had them in a regular old fish bowl because no one had told us that he would need to be in anything else. the other two fish dies very early on, but we couldn't figure out why, and chomper was still doing fine, so we just let him be. recently i decided he looked kind of lonely in the bowl all by himself, so i went to petsmart to find out what kind of fish would be best to put in with him. they informed me that he needed heated water and all kinds of special treatments that i was not giving him. at this point i bought him his current two and a half gallon tank, and "bubble wall", and a small aqarium heater. a week or so later i went back and bought a blue paradise gourami which they said he would get along well with. since introuducing the blue paradise (named big blue) chomper has started acting very strangely. at first he just seemed kind of scared, but he does that when i change the water too, so i thought he would get used to it, but then he started just sitting at the bottom of the tank all the time. he would come up at feeding time, but when he did big blue would sort of chase him away. after a while he stopped coming up at all for food even when i separate him and big blue. now they are completely seperate, and chomper still won't eat and just sits at the bottom. it takes quite a lot to rouse him, and i would infact think he was dead except that every now and then he will randomly swim around. he doesn't even really look like he's breathing anymore. his gills don't move much, he doesn't come to the top for air anymore, and he has stopped doing his trademark "kissing" face. as far as lesions go, he does seem to have a tiny bit of fin rot, but that's all. i don't know what i should do! i love the little guy, but i can't figure out what to do for him!

Volume and Frequency of water changes: i've been changing about a third of the water out every other day.

Chemical Additives or Media in your tank: i add the drops into the water that are supposed to make it safe for fishies, 10 drops per gallon, then i let it sit for about an hour to make sure it's safe for them.

Tank inhabitants: pink kissing gourami (he's the sick one), and a blue paradise gourami.

Recent additions to your tank (living or decoration): bubble wall and heater.

Exposure to chemicals: slightly high level of ammonia.

Digital photo (include if possible): camera won't cooperate... :(

Pink kissing gouramis grow to around 12''.. 2.5 gallons is WAY too small. A paradise fish is also not good for a 2.5 gallon tank.

You need to take both of them back as soon as you can, or they will die.

A betta is about the only thing you can keep in a 2.5 gallon tank.

You need to research fish before you buy them, or you will just continue to end up with sick and dying fish.

ok well there's not much i can do about taking back chomper, i've had him for about six months. i'm asking what i can do to help him now.

Take it back.. I don't see how you could possibly have a kissing gourami in a 2.5 gallon tank for 6 months. Especially without having a heater or filter. There's nothing you can do to help it other then take it back. It's going to die very soon in a tank that small. It's cruel to keep it in there.

yes well, he's dead now. :-( thanks for your kind words though... ha. i really never meant to do anything cruel or bad to him, and i really did care for him quite a bit, so i'd appreciate if you'd lay off the guilt trip. i was just given bad advice all around.

vancouver wasn't laying a guilt trip on you.
It really is important to research fish before you get them, and also to make sure you can properly house them. Otherwise they will die. I have learned this lesson many, many times, as have others I am sure.
It's important to make sure your little fishie friends can lead a healthy, happy life.
I hope that makes sense to you, lanatee.
