The dangers of working in a fish shop... new fishies today.

Here's the new dwarf green pike, Crenicichla compressiceps. I'm gonna gussy up his tank soon, with substrate and driftwood and all that jazz, but it's pretty bare right now. I went ahead and brought him home because I was tired of looking at him being on hold at the store.

Nothobranchius guentheri killis, a customer brought in a bunch of these guys, and with a 50% employee discount I went for it. I don't usually like pretty fish without them also being personable, but we'll give it a go anyway. I got a pair, it should be fun breeding them

Not new as of today, but still relatively new, here's my freshwater flounder trying to see if I'm carrying blackworms. Sorry little dude, it's just a camera :p. The other fish is a male Betta albimarginata juvie.

nice pick ups :good: 50% discount must be great i would save a small fortune.if i could i would get a saturday job in a lfs just for the discount :)

Heck yeah, saved me $20 today alone! I couldn't believe what a huge discount they give us. We get free RO water too, not that I use it, myself.

Now I want to find out about flounders, can I ask you questions in this post or would you prefer me to make my own?

Neal
Best asked over in Oddballs probably - however I can tell you that it's quite difficult to be 100% sure that you have a freshwater flounder. And the majority of shops get it wrong. Most sold as freshwater are in fact brackish and will slowly die in freshwater.

I've read a bit on FW flounders with a quick search on Google, and it's put me off anyway, them prefering brackish water as they mature, and eating small fish. I must say Synirr's does look much cuter than all the other pictures i've seen so far!

Neal ;)

Not all species require brackish, there are a couple that are strictly freshwater I hear, though it's almost impossible to be sure what you are really getting when you pick one up at a LFS. The truly freshwater species are more rare in the hobby than are the brackish ones, so most of the time brackish is what you'll be getting. The place I got mine just happens to be a really reliable shop with extremely knowledgeable staff, the guy in charge of ordering the fish is practically a fish encyclopedia, so I trust them when they say this fish is freshwater. I still wish I could get an ID on the species though, they don't remember what it was exactly.

Wow thats a really rare species of killi to find in a pet shop. Great find in my opinion. i'm breeding the more common killi Fundulopanchax Gardneri Lafia. What do you have for them I'm curious as far as spawning goes? I'll tell you a few things your gonna need because these arent bubblenesters like you're used to. You are going to need to feed them live or freeze dried food. You're going to need floating and sinking spawning mop and LOADS of plants, fake or real. Theres a great book that you can order from the woman that I got my killies from, her husband wrote it from his own experiences before he passed. Its called "Success with Killifish" By ed warner. Ruths website is http://www.geocities.com/killiesbyruth/index.html. She's a great woman to work with via e-mail and the pairs of fish are only $8 dollars a piece if you got into killi breeding like you are in betta breeding. Good luck with the new killies.

P.S. Once you get a spawning mop, after the first day you'll probably have eggs :good:

Edit: Looked on her site for the fish you have and she breeds them too so you could probably get another pair or another female so you could have a trio since that will help aleviate the males concentration on your one female. Also after going and getting the book and reading about your species breeding habits they breed in peat which could be harder to deal with as a beginner killi breeder, I'm a beginner also so I have a species that uses mop spawners. The book has a good article on breeding with peat so I really recommend it. Also they have a looooooooooooooooooooooong incubation time of about 1.5 months. Again something I read in the book. Good luck

Loko you are not 100% correct, i'm pretty sure Synirr doesn't think they are 'bubblenest breeders', he has an annual killi, unlike yours. His will lay eggs in a layer of peat, they will need to be dried for a certain time before being re-emersed. You don't NEED to feed live or frozen food, a good quality flake is ok, it's designed to have everything the fish needs. Yes a feeding of bloodworm or what ever is good everyweek aswel. You won't need loads of spawning mops or plants, you will need a layer of peat and a few plants for cover.

EDIT - last bit was uncalled for.

lol I love the way you talk like you know this stuff.
I wasnt implying that she thought they are bubblenesters I was just saying they arent like what she's used to breeding and I like how when i asked for help you told me a few things that I now repeat and then I see you posted on a subject I have commented on and you say completely opposite. For example I said something about feeding my killies flake food and you said it needs to be either live or freeze dried, you said to put lots of plants in if its not a trio and now you say you dont have to. Which is it Jayjay? I'm tired of how I try to express my knowledge on subjects which i DO know a little about believe it or not and you always come back with your "you know nothing" routine. From seeing how you turn things around all the time I dont suggest anyone take you seriously as far as advice goes because for all they know you could just be saying that to make yourself look better later on. From now on I'm not even going to pay attention to your snide comments about how i dont know what I'm talking about because you taught me some of the stuff i know and repeat to other people. You are in bad taste

Lol, I also breed mouthbrooding bettas and have bred angels before, I'm not strictly a bubblenester breeder... No worries, I have the good sense to research my fish before I attempt breeding them, and like jayjay said, these are egg-burriers, not mop spawners. ;)
Most of my tanks, including the one the killies are in, require live and frozen food on a daily basis. I don't even feed flake at all, and not many of the fish I keep take pellets, so take heart, ye of little faith
