I just picked this guy up at the grocery store tonight. We'll see how it does in my light conditions. It already needs to be re-potted. When I got home I noticed roots creeping out of the bottom of the pot so I placed it over a whole in my fish tank hood. From the time I put it there and up until now more roots crept out to get some of the great fish tank water action. I have a grow-lux bulb on the aquarium.. now only if this thing could live under water. :rolleyes: Any ideas on what type of plant this is?

Dracaena sp.

Colour ones, like yours, need more light than normal, one colour plant. But don't keep it in sunlight. Don't give it too much water either.

now only if this thing could live under water.

It can, but it die eventually... It is sold as aquarium plant in some fish-store.

Edit.Draceana -> Dracaena

I have so many houseplants that I'd bore you if I posted pics of all of them :lol:

My turtle tank has a plant like the one in your pic. We leave the bottom soaking in water and the top part sitting on a rock and it seems to be doing very well

Very nice plant :thumbs:

Lets see 'em!

I will probably acquire more as time goes by... but for now I'll start small. Most of my plants are in the fish tank. Well eight of them are and I do plan on getting some more as long as the Africans don't eat them. I've had good luck thus far. 8)

i was going to say looks like a dragon tree of some sort, which mrV confirmed, some sort of dracaena. i had one, grew to about 2 ft tall, then my cat decided she liked it better on the floor than the plant shelf and it never recovered after that. will need a bigger pot. they grow pretty well. make a very nice little desk tree (i even put decorations on mine one year in college becasue i had no room for a small christmas tree.......... :lol: )

I have literally dozens of houseplants. As mrV said, being a variegated variety of dracaena, your plant will require slightly more light than some other dracaenas do. If the leaves start to go mono-colour, it needs slightly more light. However, midday direct sunlight will burn the leaves; placement in an eastern facing window should be ideal. When you re-pot it, go up only one pot size; dracaenas like to have somewhat crowded rootballs. Spring is really a much better time to transplant your plants, but that one does look like it would benefit greatly from some fresh soil and a larger pot. When you water it, let it dry out slightly between waterings, but never so it's thoroughly dried out. If you keep it constantly waterlogged, the crown will eventually rot, hence why it will not stay in aquaria forever. By all means, do water any plants you have with water you remove from your tanks during water changes; it is the only fertilizer my plants get now, and they are all healthier and blooming more than they ever did with chemical additives.

LOL Knucklehead,
That reminds me of when I was in college. I majored in Criminal Justice and one of my classes we were talking about illegal substances. The Instructor brought in a "M" leaf and told us to pass it around so everyone could see it. Of course he made sure to tell us that he wanted the "leaf" back at the end of class......wonder what HE did with it??????LOL :grr:

I take it the picture removed contained images likely to induce someone to reach for their dusty Bob Marley records and start talking about 'why green is under-rated as a colour etc etc..'

:D

You could say that. I keep hearing how everyone wants this to be a family oriented site so I am only trying to comply the best I can. :)
