I know compared to an adult or most of yours he is little but he was an inch long and the thickness of spaggetti when I baught him so I think he is huge :p

There really nice fish to have. I have 3 and I love them!! they get like 1 foot though

A cool fish is a cool fish regardless of size!

They are captive bred. under 12" is much more likely.

I agree he is by far the the fish with the most character I own (aside from the lobsters) He perches on leaves and dangles from them. When I put The feeders in my tank for the ciclids and my dempsy to chase around. (only do a half a dozen a month just to let them hunt) He will let himself drift into thier midst like he is a stick then SNAP at one. Never seen him catch one but he is a trip to watch. OH and he chases his reflexion in the glass of the tank much like a beta would :p

Mine would eat from my fingers and if I made an O with my fingers he'd swim through it. Very cool fish and I really like the fact they can live 20+ years. I ended up giving him away and I am sorry I did. I will get more bichirs someday. I just recently fired up the old 75g again but this time it's housing a planted peaceful community. I will get another larger tank someday so I can keep some of the bigger bichirs.

Would be nice if they did, but 20 years is not going to happen!

A Wild caught or F1 may POSSIBLY if kept in optimal conditions live to see 10-12 years.
Most Senegalus these days are mass produced farm pieces that are more likely to live 5-8 years.

Mine is so fun to watch hanging from my plants trying to snatch up my guppies. They have so much character, cant wait till he is a foot long :)

I dont mind waiting I just like to watch him. Since I have put in my new jungle val (its blades are about an inch across) He swims in spirals up and down the blades :p

Sorry to hijack. But now Im curious on how long is an Albino Senegal and Palmas Polli life span normally is? I always thought they live up to around 20 years too.

Lower jaw species can easily live to see 20.
Upper jaws, not impossible, but unlikely to pass 10-12 for wild caught adults.

Yours (and other captive breed) will most likely not live to see 10 years, lucky to get to 8.

What a bummer, Oh well I'll just enjoy them while I have them. Wish they live longer, really love the Palmas.

Thnx gasmask.

Gasmask, Do you the I could get away with a polyepterous Delzi in the 75g tank with my Sengalus, Blood Parrot and Dempsy? Trying to decide what I want to add there the three I mentioned get along rediculously well they even share a cave.

i'm not gasmask, but i don't forsee any problems keeping a senegal, and a delhizi with a couple hybrid SA cichlids. mine are living with 9 cichla orinocensis. i've got a few dels, a couple endlicheri, 2 ornates and a little senegal. the senegal is half the size of the smallest of all the other bichers, skinny little pencil sized guy about 6 - 8 inches long. but no one bothers him, not the bigger bichers, nor the cichla (who will normally eat anything or anyone that fits in their mouths).

i know it's an extreme mismatch, bichers are not SA/CA fish, but they seem to get along with the larger cichlids just fine. bichers are ambush hunters, they lie in wait to catch their food and they don't see well at all. so as long as the other fish are faster and the same size or larger than the bichers you shouldn't have any major issues.
