ok so here's the thing. i have recently been working on a write up on hybrids and how breeding them works. i have been compiling a bunch of information and am still looking for more. i am working on making a genetics write up on hybrids and need pics of your hybrids. i would collect them myself, but there is on problem, my laziness...

i would like to compile all of them into one thread so i don't have to search everyone's posts then email the user for permission to use the pics. this way, you post the pic and give me who to give credit to (i.e. what you want me to put as your name or who owns the fish-if they gave you permission). the pics will be soley used to give examples of the different types f hybrids there are out there.

also if you could provide a short write up to help in my research it would be great. the info i would like (if known) is as follows:

type/hybrid cross:
parents' speices (i.e dad is convict, mom is firemouth):
markings/appearance:
current size:
estimated potential size:
prefered habitat (i.e. plants, rocks, caves, drift/bogwood, etc.):
personality (timid, aggressive, etc.):
other notes (i.e. food hog, burrows, moves rocks, hand feeds, active, etc.):

thank you all in advanced for your help. when i am completed i will post you the info that i have gathered for your examination. i worked really hard on it, i just want to add species profiles to it before i complete it. i used quite a bit of sources for the info, mostly people from this forum for the experience factor along with other outside knowledge. it is a compilation of observations i have made about the genetics fo the fish as reported and researched.

again i thank you for your help, and please be sure to give me a name to give credit for the info and pic. thansk guys/gals :good:

type/hybrid cross: Unknown.. Definitely some convict in there.
parents' speices: Unknown
markings/appearance: see picture
current size: 4''
estimated potential size: maybe 5''
prefered habitat : Likes cave-type places to hide.
personality : When I first got it, the nuchal hump you see in the pic appeared overnight. Terrorized jewel cichlids and convicts in a 55g tank. It's now mild mannered.. in a 40g square tank with a convict and 2 rainbow cichlids. It's no longer the dominant psycho, and doesn't really fight with any of the fish.
other notes : Paid $10 for it.. was labelled as a texas cichlid. (Obviously wrong) Was in a tank full of hybrids.. I got a 3'' jellybean parrot from the same tank, but it was killed.

you know, that looks a lot like my unknown hbrid that i posted a while back. well now it does since my fish is now more settled in and it looks just like that. hmm... seriosuly the markings are exactly the same, even the color. i do admit though... i did do a bad and went back to the store and saw one of the mystery hybrids left and bought another one. i just couldn't resist  . neither of them have the nuchal hump (which if i'm not mistaken is in dominant males???) so either mine are males that don't care or they are both females.

but thanks for the pic, do you have any more pics of other hybrids, even if you don't have them any longer? also if you have pics of non hybridized new world cichlids it would be nice. that pic is really nice, what a beautiful fish.

who do i give credit to? vancouver? or would you prefer a different name?

If you need to give credit vancouver is fine.. if not feel free to leave it out!

That's my only hybrid (hangs head in shame).. I killed my new parrot cichlid accidentally killing all the good bacteria in the filter of the tank (didn't realize I had done it).. tank went cloudy before I noticed and it died. (I'm stupid)

I had to go back twice to get that guy.. first time I pointed it out, worker told me he got it, I get home and take a closer look and worker got me a basic convict... so the next day I went back and I got the guy above, and guess what he did.. beat the snot out of the one the worker got me yesterday.

The one above didn't have a hump at the store.. it appeared pretty much overnight. It spawned with a texas X convict hybrid once, but they ate the eggs and he killed her after.

I've got LOTS of old pics on photobucket.. I'll post a couple of the clear-ish ones.

I'll let someone else post parrot pics

thanks a lot for those pics. i have the hardest time telling male and female between cichlids. but mostly because i am wanting to sex them before they are matured sexually. like my JD is only a little over 1.5" or so and i want ot know if it's a male or female but have no idea how to tell at this stage. so i'm waiting ot see.

but again thanks for the pics, i appreciate them. and the JBs look awsome!!! why did you sell the JD to the lfs? for some reason mine doesn't seem as aggressive as the JD rep seems to be. like mine will tase my other fish by going into their territory on purpose and then running out and hiding when the other fish spot it. it's cute. they never catch it, but it jsut keps doing it all day to torment the other fish. the JD never attacks anythng, but swims about. maybe it's because it's still a baby yet, so we will have to see.

edit: it's not that i need to ive credit, but i like to. i jsut don't want someone later down the road yelling at me that i used one of their pics or some of the info they typed on a forum and start trouble. that's the only reason i ask. if you prefer i don't put any name by all means i won't. i don't mind either way. like i said, i just don't want someone going "hey that's my fish! you never asked me to use it's pic!" and then we have a debate about it and all that good stuff. that's the only reason i give credit, otherwise i really wouldn't want to do the extra typing

I crammed lots of fish into a 75g tank.. I had close to 20 cichlids in the tank.. most were getting pretty sick.. I felt I had to keep the sick ones and try to heal them because I put them in the situation in the first place.. but pretty much all of them died..

My jds weren't really that bad either.. could have been because they were crammed into the tank though and not really able to show their true behavior, I don't know for sure.

1.5'' is probably too young to sex.. I just look at the blue on the face in jds.. I think it's the easiest way.

I had a young jd for awhile.. and as it grew it became a terror.. When it hit 2.5'' it started picking on my school of silver dollars and my 4-5'' severums, so I had to sell it too.. I'd like one day to have a tank with a couple jds and a couple electric blue jds.. hopefully I'll have the $$$ one day to do that.

hey, ive got lotsa hybrids....

this is my large male hybrid.
