Hi there I am new to these forums and require some help. I am a newbie to Tropical Fish (only had my tank set up for 6 weeks now) but have found my new hobby :D Currently in my 58L community tank i have 5 neons, 6 gold neons, 6 wild harlequins, 6 gold tetras, 2 green cory and a very small plec.

Within a few weeks i would like to add another 6 or so neons and I also want to find 1 (or 2) slightly larger fish that could go with my community fish at the moment with no problems what so ever.

I recently had 2 honey gourami but had to take them back as the stupid LFS sold me two males :( also i didnt want to keep one on their own as i didnt know how it would effect him. Could anyone help as i dont know what fish to go for or if i could have a single fish on their own.

I have also read that betta should be fine with the fish i currently have, i really like the betta and think i would rather have one of these but i know that i could be risking most of my fish to see if it would be ok lol, dont really want to do that now do i.

Hope someone could give me some help on what fish would be fine and also if there are any other fish i havent considered.

Many thanks Karl

I might be wrong but I think that you're probably near stocking capacity with what you have in there already. I have a 130l tank with 19 fish in (mainly small tetras, corys and platys) and 9 shrimp. That's more than enough for me. I run two filters in there and clean weekly but I think if you add any more fish firstly the tank will look overstocked and not very nice and secondly you may encounter all the secondary problems that arise through overstocking. You've only been up and running for 6 weeks and you've already added quite a lot of fish for such a short period of time. How did you cycle the tank?

i think your probably overstocked as it is

your tanks about 13g so you need to aim for 13 small fish that get to 1" each

so far you already have 23, plus the cories and plec :/

you need to get rid of about half your fish not get any more :-(

do you know what sort of plec it is, some will grow very big, like a foot long or more so fairly obviously aren't suitable for your tank.

cories do better in groups of 6+, because they're bottom swimmers you can push the stocking guidelines a little with some of these, i would get more cories to make up to 6, then pick your 2 favourite types out of all your fish, keep 5 of each of them. the rest should go back to the store i'm afraid :/

Well the tank was cycled for 5 weeks before i even put fish in there and yes i have realised that i am at full stocking capacity, no more fish for me for a while i guess. Will need to get another tank i suppose :p Have to start saving then :( or i could just start getting my dad to get his wallet out :D He probably wont yet though only had this tank a small while hehe :p Never mind then i will just have to keep it as it is for a while until i can afford another tank :S

The tank i am looking at purchasing in the future is the Fluval Duo Deep 800 does anyone know if this is a good tank for the money and also has a much larger capacity over mine although it isnt that much bigger which is great for me in my small room upstairs :D

Thanks for the quick replies :D

if you realised it was overstocked then why ask what more fish you can have?

if your going to try and keep it as it is then you must be fastiduous with tank maintenance. you may need to do water changes several times a week, add additional filters and keep doing water tests all the time. it would really be best for you and your fish to take some of them back to the store for the time being. then when you get a bigger tank in the future you can stock it again. none of the fish you have now are really rare or hard to get hold of so you'll be able to get them same again, but look after them properly.

Well i just wanted to know what larger type of fish i could put with the fish i have for when i do get a new tank :D

I will keep up the hard work on the maintenance for now and hope that they will be ok. I will invest in a new filter to keep them clean and happy and hope they will be ok. I only realised it was overstocked yesterday after i sent the message on the board. I used a website for Practical Fishkeeping Magazine which has some handy little calculation tools on there, i worked out that i can have 61cm of fish in total and worked out that all of my fish are only 55cm so this leaves a small amount of room left for them to grow a little. I am so confused i keep getting told different things by different people. Thanks for your help anyway :good:

awww man most of those calculators are awful :/

don't bother with them, stocking is really easy to work out for yourself. you find out how many us gallons is in your tank, you should have 1 inch of fish for every gallon.

so find out the adult sizes of your fish, add them all together and this should equal the tank size in us gallons. :good:

there are exceptions as with every rule but it's a pretty good guideline to start off with

you actualy have 69 Cm of fish in ther not counting the plec that could grow over 1 foot long....
Without the plec the tank wouldn`t be that badly stocked aslong as you have a decent amount of filtration in there

Also let me introduce you the ONE INCH PER GALLON GUIDELINE
I say guideline as its an often argued item on here....
Basicly you cound one inch of adult fish per US gallon(4.5ltr) of water in your tank
so 6 neon tetras who grow to 1 inch long would be 6 gallons of tank taken up.
HOWEVER larger fish such as angels oscars, discus ect polute the watter much more
I.E 1 12: oscar will polute the water much more than 12 1" tetras......

i`m asuming you have a water test kit and if so i would keep a very close eye on your water stats

Dont wish to add more confusion, but isnt 4.5 litres a UK gallon? least thats how they sell it in the petrol station

Sorry, but I definately agree that it's already too many fish for your tank. I wouln't have that many in my 30 gallon.

Yep...
1 UK gallon = 4.54609188 liter
1 US gallon = 3.7854118 liter
