This is the only place near me that has a decent stock of smallish tangs, and I'm struggling to decide which two species to add to the tank with my brichardi:

I was provisionally thinking Neolamprologus caudopunctatus and Neolamprologus cylindricus, but was wondering what the more experienced keepers would suggest?

I've never kept tangs, but I did do some research into them when I first decided to keep african cichlids.

A pair of n.leleupi would be pretty cool in there, I like the n.cylindricus as well. Sorry I'm not much help, but at least you get a free bump.

Hehe ty mate. The lelupi are nice looking but I'm not as keen on them as some of the others. I'm under the impression pretty much all of them will get on alright - the only issue is certain species cross breeding.

Need a bit more info....what size tank have you got and how many Brichardi??

1 juvi brichardi, 85L 3ftx1ftx1ft, fluval 4+ filter.

My setup is 100litre approx and I keep a range of tang species.

My favourite are by far Gold Head Compressiceps (the related but dwarf version of the malawi compressicep)... they are such a beautiful fish .

I keep leleupi and to be honest, i am trying to rehome one or even both of them. One is so aggressive and 'nasty' that I think without him the tank would be a better place.

As for your setup I'd defo recommend one/some of the following (sorry I dont know the latin names)
-Julidochromis
-More brichardi!
-Compressicep
-Brevis

They are all a good size and I personally find work well together!

The only stock I can get my hands on are the ones listed above mate, in the link.

I would go with a trio of caudopunctatus and a male/female pair of brevis from your list. Might be good to add a shoal of Danios or another type of fast dither fish like small rainbows.

If you want to keep a community stick to one Brichardi or they will take over the tank. Lielupi are a bit hard on shellies as well.

HTH

Thanks for that, I'm inclined to agree with you on having done a bit more thinking. I'm going to hold fire on putting dither fish in and will see how it goes to start - the tanks only been running a couple of months and (whilst its cycled) I'm wary of adding too many fish too quickly.

How territorial are the caudo's and brevis? I'm probably not going to add them at the same time (due to funds) but if they're fairly territorial then when I add the latter I'll do a redecoration so they can work out their own territories then.

In the long run I'm thinking of adding an L15 (small plec, 4" max length) and some Melanotaenia praecox (dwarf blue/neon rainbow fish) as dither fish. With 1 brichardi, a trio of caudopunctatus and a male/female pair of brevis does that sound reasonable for the size of tank (85L / 3ftx1ftx1ft) ?

Sounds reasonable to me. The Brevis will claim a shell/shells, caudopuncs wil claim some rockwork, as will the Brichardi, so make sure you provide enough territories for each. Rainbow fish and plec will be pretty much ignored by the others.

Has the makings of a nice community tank! :good:
