Photos Of My New Sole

just a few pics, love this guy. He's in a 48"x15"x12" that is fresh at the moment but will be gradually upped to brackish over the next month or so.

Any ideas which of those two species this actually is? I cant tell the difference

I think this is the fish sold as Brachirus panoides, but my caution here is that Brachirus orientalis is very similar and sometimes sold in its place. Do bear in mind these soles change colour, so it's very difficult to identify them by colouration. Would recommend maintaining at SG 1.005-1.010 to see how it does, since that should be tolerable to both species.

Thanks again Neale. Yeah I had it down as panoides, however all the lit I've read so far says that panoides are more oval than pan, which is slimmer and as its common name suggests shaped like a tongue. He's already settling in burrying in the sand. Just got to try an get him eating now. I know I asked this in the other thread mate, but what are your thoughts on the Crystals in there? I am finding more an more now after thinking they had all died off, I only bought 4 originally.

This is why I think a lot of the "panoides" are something else, such as B. orientalis. Without the right salinity, they won't adapt. I kept what I think was B. orientalis for about six months; eventually it starved to death, but that was my fault for keeping it in a community tank. Hence my warning not to do that! When I kept plaice in their own tanks at university, they were tough as old boots. I really do think getting them eating is the thing.

Well, at the moment there's nothing but 2 Minnows in there so hopefully if I cant get him feeding on anything else he will snack on a baby shrimp. There are tonnes in there, a lot more than I thought. I see what you mean about B. orientalis. It looks very similar to the pics I've just seen on fish database. Thats pretty muchv all that comes up in terms of care though. Pain in the +%&e these aquatic shops. These had it listed as River sole. I never bought it till I had gone home an made sure I could identify it, which apparently may be wrong

Can these go with Fig8's and knight gobies? They look really nice and have wanted one for ages but have never seen them anywhere before!

Fine with the Goby, not sure on the figure 8 tho. Neale gave me a decent list in my other thread below this one. Have a quick look at that he lists a lot of fish compatible, no mention of the Puffer tho.

I'd say no cos thats what I kept mine with and looking atthem now (i hae just fed them) they eat like mad and veryt quickly!!!

Hello m8, slightly different from the Snakeheads ur right, lol. Bte the assams hasve started their courtship dance already. I can sense the patter of tiny fins soon. They are dancing all the time now.

As for the sole, its a novalty more than anything, but I do like the unusual fish so should be good. Hardly seen this since I bought it, spends most the time in the sand. I think this tank will be mostly about whatever other odd brackish stuff I can get in. I never see them round here either btw, hadnt been to this shop for a good while but my m8 told me about them so I popped in.

How you gettin on with ur snakeheads m8?

Not many babie's left now so may all be gone in a month or two, the sp assam's are still doing dance's but as yet nothing to show for it, maybe there playing safe if you catch my drift
my pluero are growing the female has doubled the size of the male and the obscura has grown a fair bit
The ornatipinnis pair are really beefing up, nice and chunky now, still great parent's...The pulchra have grown a fair bit from when i got them aswell, there in the community tank so very difficult to photograph, feed them via a tube dropping the prawn through, they all gather around the tube waiting for prawn to drop down, reason is the tinfoil's snap up everything sooooo quick

Haha, yeah Tinfoils are insane arent they. I've got 7 in my 6ft now, 3 regular and 4 red tail. All about 7" so its tough getting food to my Bichirs. Might try that pipe thing n1

I will still be looking into more snakeheads I think m8. I am going to keep the sole on his own for a bit to see if I can get him eating, by all accounts they are tough to get settled and eating. Hopefully he will make it, if not I will prob turn this 4ft into another snakehead den.
