Photo Of The Month

i suppose that would be abit easier. and still just as fun.

i'm going to bed now, but will check this first thing in the morning and see what other people's feedback includes

the main part of the photo has been cut out and stuck onto a black back ground. this intensifies colours in the orginal photo which gives a much better photo.
Welcome to digital photography :). I also think that's OK.

Picutre of the month.........

Basically - no prizes just for fun....

All entries 1 pic per person...

Editing allowed, be creative as you like.

People who use pics found on google search engine is allowed (as it is a just for fun, so good finds of pics is welcome)

Thats just of the top off my head, more would be added.
I think that's great, though I think an additional rule shoud be added:

"It must me stated if the picture is not taken by a camera under the control of the person entering the image, and/or if it's edited (and briefly in what way)."

I know that there's easily a possibility this rule could be neglected, but in the end it doesn't really matter, it's just for fun - and the voters decide which pic is best .

ha! that does sound pretty interesting! any edited photos should be stated. the method etc... that shall be rule one.
also, i think it should be a rule that any photos that aren't member's own should also be stated.
if 2 or more people enter the same photo, the first should be entered. i would also e-mail back saying that the photo has already been entered.
i'm quite lookin forward to seeing what the enteries will be lol

I disagree entirely with what you originally said about digital image manipulation.
1. You could NOT tell if an image was skilfully edited
2. There is nothing underhand about, for example, shifting the white balance to remove the yellow cast many aquaria have from tannins etc.
3. Putting an image on a black background is no more cheating than sticking a black background behind your tank!

Judging by what is done on other forums I use (HeXus and Talk Photography), you want to rule out EXTENSIVE editing, but balance, contrast, white bal, brightness etc. are ok.
Don't bother with prizes - it introduces an incentive for cheats.
What's the point in allowing people to use others' images - Googler of the month?!

One other thing i'd throw out there, is that you have to have taken the image after the title has been put up - this encourages creativity, and discourages people from just trawling through their photo collection to get an entry.

Here are the rules HeXus uses - seem to work well

"its about your talent as a photographer but editing is permitted to highlight your subject, vastly editted images that severely distort things are not the aim. I usually suggest edits limited to sharpening and levels adjust (as per-usual from a dSLR RAW file for example) but in this instance use your editing wisely. Black and white and colour pictures are both allowed.

You take as many pictures as you want from DATE OF SUBJECT ANNOUNCEMENT until DATE OF CLOSING (about two weeks). Then you pick just ONE to submit, multiple submissions will not be accepted.
Re-size your image to NO LARGER THAN 800x600pixels and 200K in size.
Upload you image to a file-server (e.g. photobucket) and send the LINK only to EMAL ADDRESS OF MOD, if you send your actual picture it may not be included, it is your responsibility to upload it yourself"

What do you think?

I do think having a photo comp on a regular basis would be great

I think the whole idea is a big can of worms that is waiting to
create havoc on the forum

i was thinking the same lol

i love the sound of those rules, but would it be okay basing this forums rules on another forums?

and this link business... would that be like an <img src="blah blah"> kinda link that shows the actual picture?

I'll make it real simple for you guys:

Photo of the Month, on anything related to this forum, that goes for anything! Including fish, tanks, herps, other pets, natural photography, etc.
Original content only
Use the honour system

If you can't get by by using the honour system and people have to ruin it, then stop doing it for a month or 2. MFK does a great POTM, you should check theirs out.

thats where i got the idea from but everyone just votes for fish that are huge so people with normal community fish don't stand a chance.

who cares if people cheat? you're not losing out on anything.........

just do it. blimey.

Why are we going through this whole cuffufle, It is pointless people like "Liam" with their uber camera will constantly win, and why does everything have to be a competition. I think this idea is totally worthless and you my friend

create havoc on the forum
If the rules are right and it's done casually enough, how could it create havoc? I wasnt here when the forum used to have POTM, so I missed ut on seeing what happened - but I cant really imagine it being that bad  .
Other forums manage to have POTM fine, cant we? If it went bad last time, can't we just learn from mistakes last time instead of just avoiding POTM?

Why are we going through this whole cuffufle, It is pointless people like "Liam" with their uber camera will constantly win, and why does everything have to be a competition.

It's not at all just the camera, it does require technique, patience and the right subject. A competition would be fun, and encourage people to try take high-quality photos.

Saying it's pointless to run a competion because someone else will always win is just silly - there's nothing wrong with someone repeatedly winning, it encourages people to try harder and different things. It's a bit like saying "theres no point in car track racing because the person with the best car will always win".
The aim of POTM to me is to have fun and highlight some of the best photographs posted on the forum. People can enjoy looking at POTM winners photos, and some people can enjoy actually competing.

I hardly think voters would let the same person win repeatedly excessivly anyway, and remember it's not even just about the quality of the photo - content has a lot to do with it too.

I think this idea is totally worthless and you my friend

FAIL
I found that pretty unessersary  .

Come on ace, that was a bit uncalled for m8

Its like any pastime really-fisherman on canals enjoy fishing-after a while they have to compete-remember when you were at school as a junior? Sooner or later your PE teacher would want your class at school to try and beat the class of a neighbouring school in athletics. Its in some peoples nature to compete whereas others(myself) enjoy the "status quo".

well its pretty clear that people have totally different views on this. however, the day is getting nearer. any one who would like to enter shouldn't miss out just because some people don't like the idea.
the people who feel negative about this don't have to enter... of course, nobody is forcing you to like this bit of fun!
