Hi ,I am running a FOWLR system ( 100 gallons ) . I am new to the hobbie and been advised by my LFS , to use a phosphate removal product .

Can someone explain the thinking behind this please and the benifits of using the product

Many thanks

Well if you have a fish only tank the main reason for getting phosphates down is to stop algae blooms. Phosphate removal products can work but in my opinion there are better options. Firstly regular water changes and minimised feeding is the key to low phosphates. Secondly if you have a sump you can put in a refugium section. This area of the sump allows you to grow macroalgae which naturally sucks up the phosphates and nitrates in your tank. Phosphate removal products are expensive and unnecessary if the first suggestion does not work then add the second.

Hope this helps
