Every single time i go to pets at home and i also have heard this from others from different locations that they often have many tanks closed to "treat" and at one stage they shut off all livestock selling.

But today, because it was close i decided to pop in and spotted some Honey Gourami which i liked.
i was informed that 3/4 of the tanks were unsellable due to treatment so luckly mines was not but i chose 4 but the guy never let me pick my own, bagged them and sold me them, i couldnt check the fish because he had triple bagged them.

Got them home, introduced them to them and again because of the bags, i could not see them very well but i let them all into the tank and they all went their seperate ways.
I kept seeing 3 of them but one was always missing until i saw him on the ground, on his tummy but slightly to the side, i just let him sit there, i have seen it before and they often recover.
I let them settle in and i went off to do some chores and came back and again only 3 were viewable but i just happened to find the other fish in the corner, on his side on the ground.
He was still breathing and when a fish nudged him he would scoot about the tank as if nothing was wrong but would end up going back to the ground and to his side.

I decided that something was wrong and i put him in a beta tank incase he was being bullied only to find he had late stages of pop eye and his left eye is gone!!!
Now hes just lying in the beta tank on his side, still breathing and when nudged he will scoot about but im so mad at P@H.

Have they been told off for selling diseased fish or something?
My mother bought a pleco a while back and got it home and found out it was covered in ich, luckly she quarentined it and cured it.

 not best pleased!

I dont want to add insult to injury, but if you know their reputation then why buy livestock from them?

I have one within walking distance but I would never use it for anything other than food and accessories. I always see dead fish in their tanks, not just the odd fish either.

I would (and have) rather order off of the internet

what really annoys me is that they close a couple of the tanks down but will continue to sell from others when they use one big filtration system!

*raises hand in honesty*
i am a former pets@home/petsmart employee, and to be honest i left due to the lack of care of their animals. i would never ever in a million years take animals or fish from any of their branches, even if they were giving them away for free.

some of the people there are sooooo clueless, they would take water from the goldfish 'tubs' to fill the bags, then stick warm water fish in them! and yes the majority of their tanks are run off one big filtration system (or they were where i worked) so if one tank is infected the others must be surely??

i still shudder at the day a delivery of 'cheap off the back of a lorry' mice came in, damn close to two hundred, all swarming with mange and mites. they reduced the price to 50p per mouse and sold them all as they were. that is a sight i never want to se again.

oh and the poor python kept in a box in the staff room :(

I have never really purchased any live stock from P@H before, i have seen tanks in fish shops shut for treatment so i thought it would be ok because they are not selling the treated fish.

After i purchased the gourami, i was waiting for my mum and i spotted a dead Discus and a couple of dead angels in different tanks which did make me a bit nervey.

At least now i dont think i could ever buy from them, the other gourami "seem" ok, just praying its a one off but i am going to call them to let them know that one of them had pop eye. its still kinda alive, its flat on its side and looking like he is truggling to breath taking sharp breaths. I am keeping a close eye on the others for now to see if there is anything wrong.

Il be honest.... My local pets mart isnt bad at all. Everyone i know who shops there hasnt had a problem. The only problem is that the staff know **** all.

Of what I have seen on this forum, Pets @ Home can differ from store to store.

People have been quick to 'jump on the band-wagon' and slag off the very name. This, I feel, is very unfair. My very local one is very good. Not that I use it other than a diversion while Mrs D is in the shop next door!

I have yet to go in ANY fish shop (except yours, Modaz :hey: ) that hasn't got one or two either dead or distressed fish in their tanks. Doesn't necessarily earn them the title of a poorly run shop.

A shop I regularily use was really slated by a member here but I have found them to be excellent in all the main areas, ie. health, advice and price!

Most of us have a wealth of places to choose from due to the enormous popularity of fish-keeping so if you see something that you dont like and YOU ARE INFORMED ENOUGH then make your feelings known to the manager and shop elsewhere.

p@h is crap end of for fish, goof for foods etc but anything else, no go area, p@h once again you have been shamed
