I was in Pets at home today and saw that they were selling gsp for £6.99
There were about eight 2.5inch puffers in the tank and it must have been about 40L max with no plants.
The aggression must have been really bad because most of the puffers had badly nipped fins.
Also they we're being kept in freshwater, although there was a sign saying that they would have to be gradually have to go into brackist water

What does everybody else think of this?

It was the wellingborough store by the way if anybody wanted to know.

I thoguht puffers are ok to be kept in FW and gradually increased into brackish water?

And save this for the tropical discussion forum, I would of thought Brackish dosent need the useless dribble that goes on in tropical discussion.

Thanks Bye

I said that that was ok. Note the word 'although' !

Ace i think you are being a bit harsh here..

I understand what you are saying at 2.5inches im sure they shud be in brackish by now also they should have said something on the tank about them being brackish and eventually marine.. 40l is far too small for them especially with no plants to break the lines of sight..

Poor little buggers!!

I think some people are confusing a tank that is a temporary home from where fish will be sold with a tank that is designed to keep the fish for its lifespan.

I'm with Ace and bored of all the people slating P@H when, in reality, they aren't that bad a shop for the most part and are certainly doing their bit to gradually improve as anyone who visits the one near me in Southend will see. Look at how many normal lfs would sell GSP and not even tell you they were brackish.

I was in pets@home this afternoon and I was impressed by the way the fish were kept. Talking to one of the employees I mentioned I liked bettas best, he asked how many I had...I said 12 :shout: :shout: he said what! I explained they were in separate tanks.... :good: :good:

Pet Shop= hell for fish. Wild fish get captured put in an overcrowded glass box exposed to disease and harsh cramped living conditions. Lots of fish die. It has been this way forever. Horror stories like these are no surprise by now. It takes a special idiot like earthling84 to surprise me.

The local Pets @ Home to me (at Hemel Hempsted) is actually quite good. I buy a few things from there like food and plants without complaint, and the staff are very nice. At least one of the chaps is a serious hobbyist, having bred seahorses among other things. For the most part the stock is well chosen and the advice given at least adequate.

Without naming any names, I've been to a few shops that regularly make it into magazines' "top ten" shops and been really concerned about some of their decisions. I've seen them selling fish that virtually no life expectancy in aquaria (especially things like marine angels and butterflies) as well as fish that get ridiculously big and can't possibly be maintained in a home aquarium.

Simply because an aquarium shop is a chain rather than a boutique store doesn't (in my opinion) make it somehow better. At the end of the day it is up to the aquarist to do their research.

Cheers, Neale

PS. For what it's worth, GSP can live a long time -- years -- in freshwater. They are freshwater fish as adults in the wild. So while it is true they do better in brackish water in captivity, short term maintenance in a brackish water tank, especially in clean, hard, alkaline water, won't cause any problems. You can immediately acclimate new stock to brackish water using the drip method, so adding them your brackish water system is not a problem.

Sorry my point wasnt about Pets @ Home as I felt I have defended them enough in the other threads enough and my feelings on them are expressed.

The point I was making is that Brackish Forum dosent need to go down to the level of tropical discussion, with people like Nmonks, Andy and others posting in it, I thought it was above random slander against companies.
