Dont want to knock all staff that work at Pets at Home , but as i was buying some flake food today i couldnt help but over hear a conversation between a member of staff and a young lady asking for some advice.
To keep it short , she was asking how many Guppies he thought she should buy as she liked how they fluttered in the water.(her words).
He asked the run of the mill questions, how big is your tank ? how long have you had it ? how many fish are in it ?
She replied that it was her husbands tank and she gestured with her hands held out a rough size of the tank . "about this big". Then she went on to say " I think theres about 12 fish in it but they only small"
"OK" he says "well in my opinion i think you should by 4 males and 2 females as you have to keep these at a 2-1 ratio".
(yes thats what he said ) Then he gave a chewing gum smile and stroked his fingers through his hair saying "you know wo a mean".
At this point the young ladies phone rang out Justin Beeber at 200 deci bells and she answered it and walked off.
Lucky escape Guppies :good:
Come on Pets at Home train your staff or change procedure please before letting them loose on the public.

Justin Beebers is good for something then

Keith.

Here we go again

I am not saying that it didn't happen like you say but P @ H do have policies which their staff are trained to follow. The run of the mill questions you stated are questions that should be asked.

If you are really bothered about what you witnessed then why not either contact their HQ with details or ask to speak to the manager.

I really do think it's time to stop slagging off P@H on here unless you want to change things. It's not a fish shop it's a pet shop supplying a basic overall service. I know it doesn't make it right but there is a lot worse in the world.

I've used pets at home in the past and I have to say that I think that they are a pretty decent store/s.

Like you said they have to cater for other pets aswell as fish and I do believe that they do ask the right questions.

BUT I dont believe that the whole 100% of the staff know the right answers to their own questions.

Majority of them are students with barely any experience just doing their 6 week holiday earners and prob don't even care what happens to the live stock they sell.

Some of them seem to think that just because they understand the nitrogen cycle, they're experts as this always seems to be the first question they ask "how long has the tank been running? Has it completed its cycle?"

BUT [another but]...My local pets at home have staff [some students] that,to be fair do hold a decent amount of knowledge, do give the right advice [I like to test their knowledge every now and again lol] and won't sell live stock unless they are happy that it will be properly cared for. I don't know any lfs that do that and i've been to loads.

It's a shame that it's always the odd staff noob that people who are part of forums seem to get, and the whole store gets slated to the ground for it.

Right! I've rambled enough!....I'm going for a fag and then hitting the sack!..Night all!

yes fair point, and yes it doesnt make it right ,
Just seemed comical at the time .
The member of staff trying to impress only to be shot down in flames
by J Beeber.
The questions they ask are a step in the right direction. Its product knowledge that didnt seem to do himself any favours.
If only all fish suppliers asked a few more questions it could only be for the benifit of us all.
But at the end of the day if you dont know what you talking about (my oppinion)he should of passed her to somebody else, however every one has to learn i understand that.
On another note i was quite impressed with the variety of fish they had on sale in good conditions. Cant fault that at all.
