Pesky Cat!

Or does anyone know of any alternatives?
Get a small indoor plant sprayer or water pistol and everytime the cat goes near the tank "POW". Works for me. The cat dont bother the fish no more.
My wife hates me doing this as its her cat but the times I have to do it now are few and far between. Every now and then the cat has a bit of memory loss and needs to be reminded.

Yup! :D

A dog is the best cat deterrant known to man.
Care to come to my house and tell my kitties that? In my neighborhood we have a Husky, a pit bull, Great Dane, Setter and some hunting dogs. My kitties attack and chase these poor dogs out of the yard whenever they venture near. I have the only poopless yard in the neighborhood. Seriously though, squirt guns and two sided sticky tape work best.

sit on the sofa with an air rifle or bb gun. cat jumps up, BANG! cat soon associates getting shot with jumping on the tank, and leaves well alone. Job done!
(can you tell i'm not a cat person? :p)

Squirt bottles don't work on my cats either, one doesn't like it, the other one is so stubborn you can empty the blasted thing on him and he'll just stare at you. I have to go over and physically remove him from where he isn't supposed to be. And of course as soon as I sit down, he'll go right back to what he was doing. Whoever said cats have a short attention span has never met my Mr. Bailey.

Another thing that I've found to work, as long as you are consistant, is to put some change in a bottle or can and shake it when the do something you don't want. (in your case jumping on the fish tank). Just be sure they aren't looking at you when you do it, and that you do it every time they repeat the behavior. It doens't take long for them to associate the loud noise with their behavior. It works for my cats, and as I've said they are extremely stubborn.
If you think one method won't work, you can try the sticky tape in combination with the loud noise, and if that doesn't work, you might as well just let the cat do what it wants.

My cats hate when I shake plastic bags at them and the vacuum. You could keep a vacuum next to the tank or in the room. Mine won't go near it even if its off. I yell at mine though, they hate to get yelled at. The routine in our house is to put the cat where it isn't suppose to be (in your case on the fish tank) we then yell at it and tell it thats bad, Then we put it where its suppose it be(in your case the floor) we then pet it and tell it it's good. We repeat this 2-3 times and the cat normally figures it out, top of tank=bad, Floor=good. :3

If the cat just wants to watch the fish, why not put up a chair or stool or something by the tank so she can sit and watch, rather than hopping on the tank. Sometimes that works, and sometimes it doesn't (I get 3 different results amongst my 3 different cats, lol, from ignoring the chair and fish, to sitting on the chair and gazing, to ignoring the chair and hopping on the lid anyway)

One way to make the tin foil approach work better would be to add the mains current to it.

I guarantee you, your cat will only jump on there once.
