I was wondering if peroxide dipping plants kills off any bad infections on them. I'm going out in town and we may just stop by the lfs. If I see some good deals on plants I may get some and I don't want to kill my fish 😅

Peroxide can kill off some disease organisms but you need a strong dose and most plants at pet shops are kept in tanks without fish so the odds of them having anything is low.

You can rinse plants under tap water or even soak them in a bucket of tap water for a few hours. The chlorine/ chloramine will kill a lot of disease organisms on the plants.

You can quarantine plants for a few weeks.

My LPS has them in WITH fish. So I may soak them in peroxide for 30mins to an hour and then in some normal tap water for an equal amount of time. Sound good?

Put the plants in a tank without fish (quarantine) if you are concerned. A planted tank author in TFH used to frequently advise that any substance actually strong enough to kill algae or whatever would likely harm the plant.

Hmm... All my tanks have fish rn. So I can't really qt...

For over 30 years I have never bothered over plants. But, consider the store conditions...what fish are in the tank with plants, do they look healthy, are the tanks well maintained, etc, etc, etc.

Around me? No bad quality lol

I think a bleach solution would be safer than peroxide - use a really weak 10% solution (1 part bleach 9 parts water) and it will kill everything off. You can then rinse them off thoroughly and soak them in fresh water for a period of time too.

I saw the prices and knew that there are better deals on etsy and the plants would probably be higher quality than what they have at the lps

I strongly have the opinion that several infections are caused by bacteria / spores of fungus that are always around (columnaris for instance).

Plus we call them infections when the infect a fish or different animals when they are wounded or weakened and their own immunesystem can't cope.

So any precaution like this won't prevent fish getting infected by these after all.

I think Byron's QT + having a balance in your tank is the best illnessprevention possible.

You can quarantine plants in a bucket of tap water.

You can put them in straight household bleach for 1 minute then rinse well. Then put in a bucket of tap water for a few days. Change the water each day to get rid of any residual chlorine form the bleach. You can also double or triple dose dechlorinator in the bucket of water with plants to help neutralise chlorine.
