I'm settled on buying a betta to start with and then maybe some dwarf corys in a 5 to 10 gal tank. I want it to be perfect for the betta. Is there anything I should try to do with the:
planting (real or fake, big or small, etc)
filter (internal, undergravel, external)
rocks (any types, do they like somewhere to hide)
wood (any type)
etc
that he will prefer?

it seems like you've done lots of research already.
with planting it doesn't really matter as long as fake plants don't have anthing shark they can rip their fins on(which applies to everything).
Filter any will do as long as they don't create too strong of a current because bettas aren't the strongest swimmers, although i would advise you against undergravel.
Wood, if it's safe for other fish it will be for a betta.

Just make sure there are hiding places along with open swimming areas and you should be fine.
