Jewel brand ammonia that is sold at jewel osco is a VERY VERY strong ammonia, so watch out when you are cycling, 1 drop straight from the bottle rose my ammonia from 0.0 to 4.0 in a 75 gallon planted tank. Oh and make sure you dont smell it, i was just curious and i made a big mistake.......

i took a whiff of a cottonball soaked in amonia as a kid and got an instant nosebleed, so i can only imagine.

I hate to diagree but it is impossible for a single drop to raise 75 gallons (probably only 65 to 70 with displacement by substrate, decorations, etc.) to 4ppm unless it is truely pure ammonia. According to the formula used by backtotopical in another thread, it would take 1.14ml of pure ammonia to raise 75 gallon to 4ppm. And since the ammonia in the bottle is definitely not pure (it is a water/ammonia mixture) you would need more depending on the exact concentration.

i dunno, its what it said on my test kit, its an API test kit and i did three tests, one after an hour of adding 2 drops of ammonia, 8.0 (top of the test). 16 hours later it was low, i think it was like .5, then 0. Added another drop, 4.0, left in about 6-8 hours. Liquid test. I could video it but the biggest container i have that doesnt have life in it is a 90 QT rubbermaid container, i guess i could fill it with water, put a drop in, and test for you guys....

On the bottle the instructions tell you to dilute it before using to clean toilets and stuff.

You have to dilute any ammonia before using. You couldn't stand the smell otherwise. It's just physically impossible for a single drop to raise the level that high. Just think about it. How many "drops" of water are in a 75 gallon tank?

I just did a little test and it takes 85 drops from my pipette to fill to the 5ml mark on my test tube. Obviously that isn't totally scientific as I did it once and nexttim could take 75 or 95 but it is close enough for this. That is 17 drops per ml. There are 283,905.884 milliliters in 75 gallon. Multiply that by 17 drops/ml and you get 4,826,400.028 drops. So 1 drop would be 1 part per 4.8264 million or about .2ppm IF it were pure ammonia which it isn't as pure ammonia is a gas. Either your test kit is off or you are doing something wrong.

well its a 75 gallon tank but the actual water volume isnt 75 gallons considering the plants, driftwood, sand etc that takes up space. Probably something like 60 gallons of water in there.

What could i be doing wrong, im not retarded and dont know what a drop is lol. Test kit could be inaccurate.... But its worked for me before when i did a fish cycle before i knew about fishless.... Could it be a different ammonia ion or whatever? maybe this type of ammonia can prove to be inaccurate on a test kit but ammonia from rotting fish poop and food is accurate on the test?

LOL :hyper: , so after you picked yourself up off the floor, you done this thread, credit to you :good:

lol, no actually i cycled the tank quite a while ago (bout 3 months ago), took me a long time to pick myself off the floor lol

I'm not certain what you coulld have done wrong and Im sure you know how to read your test kits but still, it's impossible. Even if it wasn't but 60 gallon, it still would leave you with 3,861,120 drops or about 1 part per 3.86 million. That would only result in about .26 ppm once again IF it was pure ammonia.

And as for as the ion, I don't think there is but one type. The kits we use measure both ammonia (toxic) and ammonium (non-toxic) to get total ammonia which is the reading you see. As the pH rises, more of it is ammonia thus the reason the toxicity rises with higher pH. In either case, the kit will register the same thing.

yeah i live near chicago and i got ammonia from jewl like 2 monthes ago but it wasnt that strong. i had to put like 1 cup to raise it to 5 ppm in my 48 gallon tank

Now that's way too much in the other direction. Most household ammonia is about 9 to 10 percent so usually 1ml will raise 5 gallon to about 5ppm. 1 cup equals 236ml so that should be enough to raise 1180 gallon to 5ppm. For 9.5% ammonia, it should take .996 ml to raise 5 gallon to 5ppm
